Nope, your observations are spot on...not naval battles other than automatic engagements.

Naval battles in rtw are restricted to auto-resolve engagements. The ability to actually 'fight' naval battles features in etw.

rtw naval battles are fairly simplistic and usually the faction with the biggest fleet will win. If you are weary of rebel pirate fleets clogging the seas and blocking your ports, it is possible to reduce the pesky rascals appearing by editing your game files.

Ahoy there shipmate Rome2 ship battles with plenty of ramming and ripping off the enemy oars gets my vote.

I sometimes feel they missed a trick in rtw and BI etc, fair selection of warships that 'double up' as troop/stack carriers, but it would've been good to see dedicated transport vessels that can't fight and need protection from yer regular warships.

"Sir, enemy fleet approaching," Antigonos told Dionysios.
    "How many ships?"
    "One bireme."
"Good," Dionysios said smugly. "We can deal with whatever is on board."
And then 1600 Urban Cohorts step off of the ship.
"What? How did that happen?" Dionysios asked, aghast, before falling under a storm of pila.

Yeah, let's watch the 40 crew members carry 1600 men across the Mediterranean!

    Witty stuff!!

No doubt many a coastal resident/soldier has watched in awe as 20 ready-built onagers roll off a tiny bireme.

Unarmed transport vessels would've added a touch of authenticity and strategy in planning naval invasions.

It's an unfortunate oversight that's for sure. All we can hope for is that it'll be included in a future release

Aye, sadly the naval battle aspect isn't much to row home about. Still, at the time it was a big improvement over the clumsy naval stuff in med1. All that lining up of ships along the coastline like ducks in a row. Zzzzzzzz....or quackers. heheheheh
