Default Atheist Billboard Forced to Move After Threats

CINCINNATI -- In the wake of multiple, significant threats, the downtown billboard that says “Don’t Believe In God? You are not alone” came down early Thursday morning.

The billboard had gone up Tuesday afternoon at Reading Road and 12th Street, one block south of Liberty Street and it is being moved to a new site Thursday at the Sixth Street Viaduct.

The group that funded the billboard, the United Coalition of Reason, was contacted by Lamar Advertising of Cincinnati. Lamar reported that the landowner of the site had been threatened over the billboard's message and wanted it taken down.

"We weren't given the landowner's identity or precise details," reported Fred Edwords, national director of the United Coalition of Reason. "Nor did we pursue them. It was sufficient to learn that multiple, significant threats had been received and that Lamar would act quickly to alleviate the problem. Lamar was most apologetic to us regarding the situation. It was a development they hadn't expected. Nor had we. Nothing like this has ever happened to us before."

"Everything that has happened shows just how vital our message is," said Shawn Jeffers, co-coordinator for the Cincinnati Coalition of Reason. "It proves our point, that bigotry against people who don't believe in a god is still very real in America. Only when we atheists, agnostics and humanists come together and go public about our views will people have a chance to learn that we too are part of the community and deserve respect."

This is what I was talking about when I mentioned the majority oppressing the minority. In America the majority (at least 80%, I believe) is Christian. Apparently Muslims aren't the only people who start violently threatening people when something happens that challenges their religious views? Or doesn't even challenge them at all, just suggests something else? It's utterly ridiculous for someone to receive threats because of a billboard which could not be construed as offensive to anyone.

If I go around provoking the weak and dumb, be sure that I will find many who react.

It is: arrogance promoting aggressiveness and rejoicing in it. Hilarious.

take down all the crosses and posters on churches then, for they are both arrogant and ignorant in their superstitous hate mongering.

And yea if some religious sect of any kind were to put up a billboard I would be just as annoyed.

have you looked at a church or mosque recently?

Yea and I didn't see "WORSHIP HERE!" anywhere on it. Was just a big stone structure.

I'm not denying some places do that on announcement boards and things, but I don't condone it the least.

A miniskirt covers the essential only if you aren't looking at it from below.

    From the article, emphasis mine:

..."Everything that has happened shows just how vital our message is," said Shawn Jeffers, co-coordinator for the Cincinnati Coalition of Reason. "It proves our point, that bigotry against people who don't believe in a god is still very real in America. Only when we atheists, agnostics and humanists come together and go public about our views will people have a chance to learn that we too are part of the community and deserve respect."
Is he starting a Church? Proselytizing much? Demanding recognition for his beliefs?

I agree that people shouldn't threaten others for what they believe. But, I also think that he would be picketing the storefront of a place of business that had a sign which offered a different view than his. Would he claim oppression then?

No, only looking down on people has, as you have proven, a key disadvantage: you forget reality in the name of your point of view.

Infact, nobody should speak, unless he can look down on people while also looking up to them.

Or perhaps, a good memory suffices? Women do have reproductive organs and lingerie, humans can be aggressive, being derisive provokes them to be so, etc. Remembering this kind of information saves energy to actually get in touch with what you know without looking at it too much.

I'm tempted to put such a sign up on my front lawn. I have one neighbour who happens to be Christian who likes to vandalize my lawn every night, so I wonder what he would do with it.

The people in the area overreacted, to say the least. I see signs like "Believe in God, you're not alone!" all the time. I don't go making threats to whomever put it up.

It deserves anthropological attention that there are so many christian criminals. Perhaps religion promotes crime. Of course, hearsay always has the ability to make an assertion dubious.

I'd attribute it more to the weak and the stupid who are often compelled to follow whatever it is they see as mainstream, or "normal".

You can be sure most criminals just love American Idol.

So you wear miniskirts. Interesting. Now, I won't get into the topology of saddleback-shaped spaces, to tell you that it is impossible that many miniskirts cover you more than one. Just compliment you for your choice of clothes.
