    Default ambushing

hi guys. just wondering how to set up the perfect ambush. obviously they need to be hiding in woods. but do you need the actural units to be able to hide? do all of them? will a general make it worse unless he is verry good at ambushing? do they need movement points left or anything silly? cheers

    Ambushing works like this:
Army A stands on top of a forest on the campaign map, and crouches to show that it's hidden.
Army B approaches army A's zone of control (Brown circles around army A).
Army A is given a choice: Launch an ambush or not.
If army A decided to launch it, it depends on the general and some bit of luck if the ambush caught army B by surprise or not.

As for setting up the troops - I suggest placing artillery behind the enemy column (If the ambush is successful, of course) and archers on both of their sides, in front of the archers place spearmen, in front of the artillery infantry and behind the artillery cavalry - When the enemy army disperses and attacks one side, have the other side charge, the infantry at the artillery flank them and the cavalry deliver the final blow.

    Ambushes are really fun

I don't think there is such a way. He's either spawned with that trait or gets it from successfully ambushing. It can be quite a rare trait.

When I play as england, I normally have two stacks ambushing opposite each other, so .. both sided ambush wtf?

I find that quite ineffective really. I only ambush when I'm up against far superior forces - 2:1 or 3:1 ratios, or even more. Ambushing is really good with that kind of odds, before the battle even starts you already kill 100 of your enemy's troops (Tight column + Many enemy archers = At least 100 dead)

Maybe your not doing it right

I just put them there because

    a) I can afford it

    b) I don't like French

What I meant was, why put 2 stacks there when you can put just one stack there and have the same results? It's ineffective because it's not cost-efficient and you can separate the two stacks, and do two ambushes, giving twice the fruit

I usually think strong melee units, especially cavalries, are best for ambushes. because you can charge them without them being properly formed up. hopefully routing a couple units right off the bat and create a chain rout.

If you mean ambush on the field though, usually just keep your archer / artillery group near the trees. and set up a good portion of ur infantry / cav inside the woods. wait for them to come to you, then boom.
