NEW YORK - Federal prosecutors Thursday took steps to seize four U.S. mosques and a Fifth Avenue skyscraper owned by a nonprofit Muslim organization long suspected of being secretly controlled by the Iranian government.

In what could prove to be one of the biggest counterterrorism seizures in U.S. history, prosecutors filed a civil complaint in federal court seeking the forfeiture of more than $500 million in assets of the Alavi Foundation and an alleged front company.


The assets include Islamic centers in New York City, Maryland, California and Houston, more than 100 acres in Virginia, and a 36-story office tower in New York.

It sounds like the property seizures were rightful. If the Alavi Foundation is truly funding terrorism, it should be prosecuted and its property should be seized. I don't think this had anything to do with prejudice.

It might have something to do with the repeated murders, rapes, beatings, and torturing during and after the so-called Green Revolution. Iran is sort-of an evil regime.

All of that happens in many if not all countries. America has no position to classify a country as "evil". They should stop invading countries (in the process killing many innocent civilians) and torturing people in camps before even thinking about making such judgments.

The group owning these mosques and buildings is suspected to have sent millions of dollars to an Iranian bank that, because it is involved in financing Iran's nuclear development program, is declared illegal in the U.S.

It does sort of raise some interesting questions as to when something is treason and when something isn't. It is pretty obvious that when one is at war with a nation then aiding them is treason, but in these semi-proxy grey conflicts, who is to say? I remember hearing a story about an American who was murdered by the CIA because he was working with the Sandinistas. I certainly would never approve of working with them, but seeing as we were not a war with them is that really fair?

I won't go so far as too say your point is irrelevant. However, even if the U.S. and Israel had more normal relations, it wouldn't change the situation. Much of Europe has similar policies with regards to Iran.

Because it isnt illegal to do business with those as it is with this specific bank due to it being a claimed front operation? As far as the nukes, dunno maybe because its after the fact already and Israel along with India and Pakistan *already* have weapons making it moot and none of the three have signed on to treaty binding them cooperation, transparency etc while Iran has.
