NAU (North American Union)

This is a pretty simple, and straightforward question. Do you think that the North American countries (Canada,US and Mexico) would benefit from forming a union almost identical to the EU?

Why or Why not?

I think it would be beneficial for all parties involved. Although, it would be very difficult. Considering the crime and corruption in Mexico. But hey, maybe Open Borders, a common currency, and free trade would help Mexico raise its standards?

it would certainly benefit Mexicans, but did you ever bother to look at it from American and Canadian perspective?

as far as trade goes, for all practical purposes it is already pretty darn free. I personally think that NAU is a horrible idea.

It would benifit us all? probably for a little while, but would it work/last? I doubt it. To much corruption everywhere, nationalists in all three countries would be up in arms, open borders would allow all those wonderful gangs armed with assault rifles and RPG's that are hardly being contained (ok they arn't really contained at all) in Mexico to run rampant and full force all over the U.S. and Canada, security would be awful, keep in mind we're talking about an area much larger than Europe and many more people.

Tree is pretty much free, so no reason there for a merger. The lack of economic gain would thus the make the restructuring of the three national governments into a new international one a very bad investment. Also, unlike the EU which has to fear a three-pronged US/China/Russia invasion in the near future, North America really has nothing to fear from foreign nations. Probably the only positive consequence of a merger would be the effects on the drug trade. If the US and Canada can bring to bear their considerable resources, the Mexican cartels will be at the least run underground where they can only do minimal harm and won't be able deliver massive amounts of drugs to the north.

So for the reasons above, I believe that a union will not be beneficial.

No, I do not think so. The US and Canada would have to divert too much of their resources to aid mexico. Mexico would simply become a liability. Canada and America could work, but not with mexico too.
