    Default Reinforcements Delayed?!?!?!

I have been playing RTR for a verrrrry looooong time and this is the first time I have used the "huge" armies and it seems that it is impossible to fight the computer with more than one army EVERY time I have tried this it says reinforcements have been delayed while the computer gets their reinforcements EVERY time is this just a RTR "huge" bug that cannot be fixxed? Or should I just restart my months of taking the world over with the Greeks and go back to normal size so I can actually win late game against the Romans 4 armies together since I can only fight with one...... Can anyone help me please?

You're computer can't handle the amount of men that your reinforcements would add so they never show up. Sorry for the brief response, in a hurry though.

I thought that was the case too Imperator Romani but it is not.

Find your preferences file where you have installed your game (program files) then open it.
    Look then for this line:

    Code:
    TERRAIN_QUALITY:HIGH
    EFFECT_QUALITY:HIGH
    VEGETATION_QUALITY:HIGH
    KEYSET:0
    UNLIMITED_MEN_ON_BATTLEFIELD:FALSE
    CAMPAIGN_MAP_CAMERA_SMOOTHING:TRUE
    CHAT_MSG_DURATION:10
    USE_QUICKCHAT:FALSE
    Then change it to:

    Code:
    TERRAIN_QUALITY:HIGH
    EFFECT_QUALITY:HIGH
    VEGETATION_QUALITY:HIGH
    KEYSET:0
    UNLIMITED_MEN_ON_BATTLEFIELD:TRUE
    CAMPAIGN_MAP_CAMERA_SMOOTHING:TRUE
    CHAT_MSG_DURATION:10
    USE_QUICKCHAT:FALSE
Have fun Tenka, make sure your computer can handle it though. Lag is a killer

The "reinforcements delayed?" drop-down message in RTW I sometimes think is a kind of random game mechanic to add a bit of suspense or uncertainty to carefully planned battles/seiges. Just as in real history, a commander would gamble or rely on their reinforcements arriving in time.

The system specs on a computer I play on far exceed the rtw system requirements. (512mb vid card and all that).

Med2 spells it out a bit more clearly with a splash message sometimes popping up "The full battle cannot commence unless you upgrade your GPU/CPU or change your settings".

Anyone know for sure that the reinforcements delayed message in rtw is also a random mechanic to add uncertainty to battles?

If your reinforcing army is out of movement points in the campaign map I believe they will be delayed.

Now I am even more confused Mr Corbett..err Mr Genius!!! (great avatar)

2 questions now arise in my mind...how can an a reinforcing army out of movement points suddenly gain movement points in the same turn?

And..often-times I will commence an assault/seige a city with my multiple stacks and leave them there for a turn or two to build up the seigey stuff, therefore they cannot be out of movement points on the turn used to actually "go get 'em"

    The mystery deepens methinks??

Thank you for recognising him. You're the second person to comment
Okay, so how it happens is that the battle is fought on a particular tile on the campaign map. Where the attacking army comes from determines the direction you set up on in the battle map. When you have reinforcements they come in from a different side. Note that on the campaign map they will not move (in ordinary circumstances) when they gain a victory. Only the army that was controlled will move forward. All the reinforcing army does is fight the battle, but it often comes to the battle late. Incidently, if your unit is out of movement points I think the chances of a successful ambush are reduced (or not possible at all, can't remember).

With your second question, have you got the option selected that you want to control the armies? Because of the limit of units you can control, if you choose to command all units only 20 can be on the field in your control at the same time. The only way to get around this is to let the AI control some. Does that answer your query?

Heheheh how could an Englishman not recogise the great man?!! I wonder if li'l ole Ronnie is a tw player in real life?

+rep dispensed for the avatar alone!!

I'm on the ball with the tile based map stuff, and looking to clarify this bit: quote "All the reinforcing army does is fight the battle, but it often comes to the battle late". unquote"

Graphics card issues aside, I sometimes wonder if the late arrival, ie reinforcements delayed? message drop box,is part of a gameplay mechanic to introduce a bit of tension/uncertainty to battles?.

Similar to the 'select weather' gameplay mechanic, whereby uncertainty/tension is introduced with the player 'gambling' on the weather condition improving or deteriorating.

    Anyone know for sure?

Hit a raw nerve with your second paragraph !. Upon battle/seige commencement I click the army involvement boxes as appropriate to ensure that I am the only fighting army, and that any reinforcements are filtered into my 20 card slot. I dislike any AI army (apart from the enemy!) involvement.

Way too often, battle commences... and an unwanted AI reinforcement army appears on the other side of town and starts trashing the enemy, leaving me as the player, with fook all to do but watch.

What happens with me is that unwanted AI reinforcements get chewed up and end up taking more losses than I would have had I played it. I've never had even full-stack AI reinforcements "trash" the enemy, they just... charge and die...

I'm sorry, it has nothing to do with campaign movement points as they have already made it if they are on the pre battle screen. The quick change to your preferences file will sort it out.

If you are using a mod which has night battles AI reinforcements will not arrive if you choose for the battle to take place at night.

I kind of figure the same. If a player has got his stacks all 'seiged up' and in the pre-battle screen, then it cant be a movement point problem. Am I right in thinking that if the cfg pref file change is made to unlimited men on battlefield, that the ' reinforcements delayed?' drop down will never appear, and therefore the drop down is not a 'tension builder' gameplay mechanic?

And as regards unwanted ai reinforcements..I feel a separate thread coming on...grrrr

I haven't looked into it that much Firefight but for the OP that seems like the only way he can have his large scale battles as UNLIMITED_MEN_ON_BATTLEFIELD: FALSE is a built in (ie default) option from the devs to limit the amount of men on the field at any one time, probably beacuase it would have taken a real high tech rig when the game came out to have 6000 - 10 000 men on your screen at any one moment. Probably to try to cut down on lag and such.

I think if it's to cut down numbers on the battlefield it would work same in case of AI armies.

I can confirm that if it is in case of AI armies, the game doesn't take care on your cpu since
i have been playing it on an old 2.2 ghz (single core - 10 years old) which i have taken to my
office to be able to play there aswell (hehe).

I got attacked by two full stack armies and i got reinforced by another almost full stack garrision force
    myself.

The performance was horrible and i could only interact with my troops when pressing the pause button.
Else it's been way too laggy for the cpu to recognize at least one of my dozens of clicks.

However - what bothers me is the fact that there is no chance about finding out wether your forces
might be delayed or arrive in time - it would be cool if one could take a look at least at how the
odds are to receive reinforcements any soon or not.

It would be good if the game showed you the chance that the reinforcements could be late. Similar to spies opening the gates perhaps. Thanks for clearing that up Deux

It would be interesting to learn if the OP or others are still receiving the drop-down message after having made the pref file change to UNLIMITED_MEN_ON_BATTLEFIELD: FALSE

I have just tried it out for you fireright.

On a siege you get no notice of reinforcement, they appear on the deployment stage which is the norm anyway.
On a field battle there seems to be a 100% chance of your reinforcements arriving, you do get a drop-down message but it just says 'reinforcements have arrived' no doubt.

If you like the chance that reinforcements willnot arrive and leave you up the creek without a paddle then maybe this is not for you.

Most obliged Deux +rep Sounds like disappointing stuff (to me anyway). I do kind of like the uncertainty 'tension' factor in not being certain that reinforcements will arrive on time. Still a bit baffled though as a comp I play on far exceeds the games sys rec requirements.
