    Default Remembrance Day in Canada

Today, November 11 is Remembrance Day in Canada. It is in honour of all the brave Canadian soldiers who have fought and died so that our country could be free. Many members of my family fought in both the 1st and 2nd world wars. The one I know the most about is my paternal grandfather. He was a gunner in a Lancaster Bomber in the RCAF. He never really liked talking about the war. I personally never heard any stories from him, but heard them from my uncles and grandmother. My father said that he was deeply affected by the war and it changed him forever.

So i just want to say thank you to my grandfather, and all the other brave Canadian soldiers.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
    In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
    In Flanders fields.

    John McCrae

Poem "In Flanders Fields" read every Remembrance Day.

Yeah but Canada and our dead mean way more than everyone elses.

Personally no, because I'm not American, and I'm fairly sure the conflict in Vietnam didn't have the unilateral hate, disgust and revulsion that all sides felt in the aftermath of World War One.

^^I doubt it. The Armistice and its aftermath was humiliating for Germany and ultimitly spawned Hitler which they are understandably not proud off.

I'm sure they have a day to honour the dead though
Humiliating yes, but still a major relief in terms of the loss of life?

sorry thought you are american for some reason. well for germany the suffering wasnt over after the armistice. people kept on starving.
i guess this and the humiliation of both the treaty and the loss of the war are major reasons. of course with all our attrocity of our country in the following war made any military related celebrations disappear completely. it is veeeeeeery slowly comming back now..

i hope i dont lie but i am not aware of a day to honor the dead either. you sometimes see monuments on cementaries remembering the fallen of ww1 and 2 but even those are much more rare then for example in canada

No worries, I suppose so, but I wouldn't blame the German people if they wanted to celebrate their war dead, it is your right, I suppose there is still a lot of stigma attached to it though.

I have been to a few German war memorials, and I can say, compared to the French and Commonwealth British memorials, they are very very depressing and drab, reflecting of German opinion at the time perhaps.

No, we have the Volkstrauertag in honour of all dead in the two world wars. And if you're Christian there is the Totensonntag, in honour of all dead people. Actually in nearly all German towns there is war monument. Often it's just a plate urging to remember the many dead. Also in many churches are lists of all the fallen.

Now thats a really bizarre statement. Canadian soldiers died in Flanders that Canada can be free?! Did Germany attack the Canadian province of Flanders in 1914? I really wonder, what some people learn in school.

ok but i never saw a parade or official celebration on the volkstrauertag neither in towns nor cities i lived in so far. it is a very different "remembering" as there is nothing done actively to do so except maybe lowering the flag if your town has one.

I've also never seen a parade here. But you can always turn on the TV and watch a nice parade from Russia, North Korea or China, where they display their huge arsenal of nuclear death.

Though quite honestly, more so then world war 2, world war 1 was a very pointless war.

not even that. they fought for strenthening your homeland which tried to archive that by keeping a balance of powers on the continent.. british goals were as self centered as the goals of the other participants.

I can understand Germans feeling embarresed about the wars, but I would have expected them to have some kind of Rememberence Day at the very least. Its a real shame.

i guess the train of though is if you honor german soldiers you honor war criminals as they were among the soldiers. that and keeping a low profile so the west is not getting suspicious or worried about germany. not morally right, i think so to. on the one side we are tought to never forget the attrocities and bad things we inflicted which is right but on the other hand the silent 2nd goal seems to be to not remember the bad things that happened to "us" and those who had to take it. maybe they are scared people might develop a desire for revenge. i really dont know.

for ww1 i think a day like that would exist if ww1 would not be over shadowed by ww2
