Today, November 11 is Remembrance Day in Canada. It is in honour of all the brave Canadian soldiers who have fought and died so that our country could be free. Many members of my family fought in both the 1st and 2nd world wars. The one I know the most about is my paternal grandfather. He was a gunner in a Lancaster Bomber in the RCAF. He never really liked talking about the war. I personally never heard any stories from him, but heard them from my uncles and grandmother. My father said that he was deeply affected by the war and it changed him forever.
So i just want to say thank you to my grandfather, and all the other brave Canadian soldiers.
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
John McCrae
Poem "In Flanders Fields" read every Remembrance Day.
