    Default Politics and Computer Games

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8342589.stm

    So Keith Vaz MP, who surely has never had anything decent associated with his name, has made the practically decade out of date attack on computer games in Parliament, as if prompted by Chris Morris.

    But what I think is so interesting here, is the weariness and quiet support of the proponent of the opposing view, Tom Watson MP, who states, "piss off, it's no worse than any movie, stop fluffing the editor of The Daily Mail". He's even set up a Facebook group;

    http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/gr....2435364720..1

    He recognises the economic and cultural value that computer games represent in modern Britain. So, how long until the dinosaurs off?

    The part you leave out is that the first time you run the game there's a warning about a level with very explicit content and asks you if you'd like to skip it or not.

    Let's think the unthinkable, let's do the undoable. Let us prepare to grapple with the ineffable itself, and see if we may not eff it after all.

    Yeah, fair enough, they don't lie per se, it's merely the fact that they are often comissioned with a "correct" result in mind. Well spotted

    So, hang on...its ok for these people to send kids to kill other peoples kids as long as we don't give them a chance to practice first. I must be missing in the logic somewhere.

    Are you actually implying that games are...practice?

    Attacks on civilians are as modern warfare as you can get, aren't they?

    Thankfully, since it's a question of violent content, I don't fear censorship in the U.S. (though controversy would obviously flare up).

    Australia however, as always in politics and video gaming, is a lost cause.

    Violent games are meant for adults, who can control their emotions. That is why we have ratings. Kids are not supposed to play violent games, so the only people to blame is the parents. End of story.

    My question goes unanswered. How effective is that ratings system in keeping mature material out of the hands of kids?

    My personal opinion that I wager would be supported by research if it was done, that people under 25 are unduly influenced by such content.

    I agree that some people are affected, but 25 is a bit too high of margin; 18, as it is now, is fine for adult material, I was mature enough when I 16. And it is not the ratings systems fault that parents buy their children violent games, maybe if there were more severe punishments, parents would think twice about purchasing adult games for their kids.
