It's "vassals"... yes, you get a percentage in exchange for protection.

May be under diplomacy or corruption, I can't remember because I don't vassal in SS.

    a vassal, in game terms:

obligates the lord to not attack the vassal state. The vassel is now under the
    protection of the lord state

It obligates the vassel to pay the lord state. I believe half the income is paid
    to the Lord as tribute

Both parties become allied, wich effects the present diplomatic relations of
both parties with other nations. In othe words, If Venice is allied to France and
Genoa is at war with France and Venice. If Venice becomes the vassel of
Genoa, this would make Venice and Genoa allies and also end the war between
    Genoa and France.

Personaly, makeing another nation your vassel, I find more rewarding, than conquest. In the campaign's that I play, I try never to conquer but always to subdue the nations arround me, I find it more fun.

    Anyway, I hope that helps.

Yes, you get money and YES, it's worth it. If you can turn a rich enemy into a vassal you can be easily gaining an extra 30k per turn. I once conquered Africa and half the Middle East on the income from only one Vassal (I think it was Venice, it was a while ago). From memory they hand over every Florin they have beyond a given amount, something like 5k(?).

The improvements to the CAI in 6.2 seem to have had a positive effect on vassal states. In the past I have never managed to get more than one vassal and only once held them for more than about 10 Turns before they either backstab me or break the alliance over some war. In my current England campaign, however, I picked up Ireland by about Turn 20, they have twice broken the alliance and both times submitted to my rule again within 3 Turns and have been my subjects for well over 120 Turns. France is an interesting case because I've so far held onto them for 30+ Turns despite being Excommunicated (twice), having an Abysmal relationship with them for most of the time AND me leaving them with three settlements, one of which (Lyons) is a Fortress, and them being capable of steamrolling their four stacks over the largely undefended western France if they so chose while my armies are in the Baltic and Africa.
I'm currently playing as England, and after hammering the Scots the Pope went medieval on my ass and booted me out of the God club. Next thing I know, I have dirty foreigners landing on my shores from wierd and far-flung countries. - Sargon_of_Akkad

Pretty sure they give you any leftover cash they have on hand at the end of each turn, as opposed to percentage of income. As mentioned above, you DO get a good amount of money. The difficulty is in getting the AI to accept becoming a vassal in the first place.

vassal also count towards your objective total, if your a 60 settlement faction that have 2 5 settlement faction as your faction, you achieve the required 70 settlement.
1180, an unprecedented period of peace and prosperity in East Asia, it's technology and wealth is the envy of the world. But soon conflict will engulf the entire region with great consequences and lasting effects for centuries to come, not just for this region, but the entire known world, when one man, one people, unites.....

I think Callawyn is right about the amount of money you get from vassels. I recently made Scotland my vassel and on the first turn after coming under my protection I received over 30k florins from them! After that it was only a few thousand each turn. So it seems you do receive all the money they have left over at the end of their turn.

I only managed to have a Vassal once, and it was france, . i was playing as portugal, and france was begging for mercy, (so were all factions but England, Venice and Pope, me allies who were alive only because i gave them land xD) they kept sending diplomats to me begging for peace.
Having France as a vassal is extremely fun, since they nearly crushed me in the beginning.

As a matter of interest, on very rare occasions the AI will offer to become a Vassal. I once picked up Venice (which consisted of Zagreb and nothing else) after two Turns at war with them that way and, because of the 6.1 money scripts, made a fortune. I don't know if it matters, but I was allied with Hungary and HRE and at war with the Byzantines so the Venetians immediately got a ceasefire in two wars and an ally on another.
