It can't be THAT difficult, especially not for a veteran of SPQR...can it?
Or do we have to be like :sparta:.

Oh trust me, this mod has been givin' me the jitters ever since the countdown began hehe. Haven't felt this giddy since last week.
55% remaining on my download.
I will admit that I do contain the hubris and aggressive nature of the early Roman generals however hahaha.
I managed to kill Phyrrus...... Apart from that my inexperienced units did not last against the veterans. Those cavalry are very hard nuts and the elephants don't die easily either (even with hails of javelins).....

Those who have played the carthage campaign in TIC, have had a similar experience. I played that battle (at medium difficulty) seven or eight times before I could win, but I was so glad after it...unbelievable.
Can someone confirm which is more difficult ? This battle or the first one in the TIC Carthage Campaign?
Q.
The one in TIC was bearable the first time around, it just takes a more unconventional use of elephants. Considering the Romans have no elephants for the first battle, I'm assuming, it should be more difficult.
EDIT: Download's done. I'll be able to tell you in a few hours after I wake up from passing out playing this. It's 2:57am here hehe.

At the moment I'd say this one (Rome) is harder. The Epirot army is full of silver chevron units with the Hetori having two silver chevrons. Your Roman army has no chevrons.
I think it may simply be a matter of trying to kill as many of the opposition before the inevitable rout happens. I've been playing on M as well - not that I claim to be a Hannibal though.
I did win the first Carthage battle - but it had involved an change of underpants. After all in that battle you have the experienced units fighting a mass or barbarians.
I've managed to win the first Carthage battle against the rebels - it's a doddle compared to the first Roman battle.

I was able to beat win the first battle on one attempt. I have had a few goes at it because I am still trying to work out what settings are the best, I usually go with huge units and turn it all down, but I can see that later on with massive battles I am going to have problems.
So using the large unit size i set up on the far left of the roman area, after starting the battle we all charged to the top of the lovely slope that is at the back of his area. Set up one line of all my infantry spears on the flanks, the infantry were on fire at will, the missiles were grouped in a line behind with fire at will turned off.
By the time the enemy reached me, his lines were a mess and his troops a bit tired. It took a long time but the missiles took down the elephants, and were sent to help at the line which was touch and go, at some point their king had died which was nice and his cavalry had been slain by my cavalry and some spears. But three units of his spears were surrounded by my men and seemed not to want to break. A couple of cavalry charges later they were running for the hills and being slaughtered. It was furious mousework but not impossible.
I just tried a similar move on the normal unit setting and failed miserably, which I am glad about, I don't think I can stand normal size units. I also had a look at the small unit size which was good for a laugh but the missiles were unable to kill the elephants.
I am leaning towards large units, and toning down the graphics. I haven't had time to look at the towns and cities yet, but on a quick scoot around the map I was very impressed by the Iberian Peninsula, it looks epic!

No screenies here, no cookie for me
Maurits "How can it be that you win at large and loose at normal unit sizes? When you've got less missiles shouldn't the enemy also have equally less elephants?"
That was my first attempt at the battle. Following a ctd going into my first battle, which was set on huge, I decided to lower all graphics and set to small in order to confirm the game would work for me. The elephant unit consisted of only 2 elephants, but they would not die despite being targeted by the missiles. In fact when beating them on large I had not killed all of them, but simply enough to force them to rout. Luckily as I was fighting up in the corner they ran off the map and not through my line.
congratulations on your victory, we look forward to hearing more feedback..... oh, and let us know at what point you first start to think you might lose
