Islamic Forced Conversion of Coptics?

ISTANBUL (Compass Direct News) - A Coptic Christian blogger in Egypt entering his second year of prison without charge is being pressured to convert to Islam in exchange for his freedom, his attorneys said.


On Oct. 3, 2008, Hani Nazeer, a 28-year-old high school social worker from Qena, Egypt and author of the blog “Karz El Hob” (“Love Cherries”), was arrested by Egypt’s State Security Investigations (SSI) and sent to Burj Al-Arab prison. Although police never charged him with any crime, Nazeer has been detained for more than a year under Egypt’s administrative imprisonment law.

I am so sick of some Moslems declaring that the Qu'ran forbids forcing people to convert to Islam, when they practice the obvious. Are these men simply not working under the guidance of Allah, or are they truly representative of Muslims across the world? Is it a modern, widespread Muslim tendency to extort people with release from un-justified imprisonment, but only if they convert to the religion of peace? What is this nonsense?! I can provide other sources if you're an atheist and refuse to take any evidence of anything from Christians.

It doesn't seem to fit anywhere but Thema Devia, as it isn't exactly political. This is more of a news story than anything else, and yet I don't think it fits in the Mudpit. If a moderator thinks so, please do your duty and move it. .

Not exactly mass forced-conversion. That source also doesn't say what he was actually writing. Egypt doesn't strike me as a country where people are locked up without reason

I don't think they're representative of Muslims across the world. The most populous Muslim country is pushing back the fanatics as Chinggis Khan posted not long ago in EMM http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=301983. There certainly is a radical presence out there though. It's sad, because Islam has been able to co-exist peacefully with other religions in the past. I guess there will always be those who want to push their beliefs on other people. I'm not sure if the tendency you're referring to is widespread. If only people would be more respectful and let other peoples worship who they choose!

Wow, that was a really mis-leading thread title. I was hoping to see a reasoned discussion of conversion curve in Late-antique Egypt. Unfortunately, it's the same "Look, this guy in Egypt is being oppressed! All of Islam is to blame!" So deflating...

Extrajudiciary punishment is a prominent feature of the Egyptian state, and incidentally many members (or merely presumed members) of the very non-Coptic Muslim Brotherhood suffer the same fate.

A more prescient issue on the subject of Copts in Egypt is their precarious economic state, given the country's destruction of swine earlier this year.

even if the story is true (i am an Egyptian, and i am not excluding this because it happens), iCoptic Christians have ther way for forced conversion too, in the populated places in Egypt. face it, religious intolerance is present every where in the world.

so i think people should cut the "Christians are as intolerant as the Muslims, or vise versa" discussion. both sides have the F'ed up fundies.

Of course, I realize that the giving of this article was based on perpetuating a stereotype. Either way, I am bored with the subject... bah. Then how do you differecnaite between the Barelvis, the Deobandis, the Imamiyas, the Ahmedis, the Agha Khanis, the Quranists and the Ahle-Hadith? These are just the seven completely different Islamic ideologies that exist in my city alone. However, anyone with a Muslim name would be stereotyped into the type of Islam taught to semi-literates by that Jihad Watch shorty.

Therefore, whenever someone says, "I hate Islam," what exactly is it that he hates?
