There are no hordes in vanilla RTRPE. And btw, you can only have hordes if you play with the BI exe. There are a few mods based on RTR that have this implemented I think.

The best way to kill a phalanx with all infantry is to distract them from the front and then throw spears and soldiers into them from the flanks or rear.
