Default Were women less attractive in the past?

Hey guys, I'm not really sure where to put this thread but I thought it would be nice to discuss a fun historical topic for a change

Well the title basically says it all, were women less attractive in the past? I mean Venus, the most beautiful woman this world has ever seen looks just average in her sculptures, she doesn't really stack up to today's Megan Foxes... Does this mean that average women in today's day and age would have achieved goddess status in Ancient Rome?

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

I just wanted to see your historical opinion on this because every single culture in the history has claimed that the most beautiful woman was of their kind. I read that the Chinese considered Diao Chan to be the world's most beautiful woman but...

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

So yea I'm wondering if it has something to do with genetics but I'm not certain because the guys in ancient times basically look the same as the guys now...

So maybe it's just a cultural thing, maybe the ancient Romans and Chinese had a different view of beauty as we do today...

So ok have fun discussing this matter historical insight would be great

Right is beauty dictated more by social norms or basic instinctual preferences. I mean, I think Marylin Monroe is attractive and she lived back in the 60s...

Not really, at times it was attractive for men to have a rather square upperbody, while now a trapezium where the shoulders are broader is preferred. And that's even very general, if we look at hipsters and fashionista's these days with their extremely slender frames, while the early 90's favoured a more robust build we can see it changing int he span of a decade.
The differences are usually less noticeable though than with women; has to do with the enitire visual attraction bit and the pronouncement of ferility features in women.

Combination of both really. I recently read a sociological study though where the argument was made that even as preferences in weight, hairstyles, breast sizes,... changes, some things remained constant, most notably the hip-waist-breast ratio.

We like the same thing we always have - hips for childbirth (the curve), boobs for breastfeeding, shapely legs for travelling, and a kissable head.

And since nighties in the hand of computer graphics too. Without both and tons of make-up the tabloid "stars" are nothing special.

    sigh...

The Romans were fricken known for bathing regularly, as were many other ancients. They certainly had shaving implements, and "less smart"? They had the same mental capacity as you or me. Now, if you mean less knowledgeable, you can't really hold that against them.

Well, the average woman probably was-a lifetime of little hair washing, normal washing, bad smelling. But the men got over it, as they were the same.
