trying to get RTW gold up and running

I had Rome Total War Gold (RTW plus BI) installed and I went and installed the 1.9 Platinum mod, as well as some of the platinum optional mods, and I did this without backing up any of the original game folders. I decided to go back to the original RTW, so I uninstalled the game and deleted the game folders from Program Files. But after reinstalling the RTW gold, the game menu options would load normally when launched, but when I would attempt to launch any game, the program would quit and I would get an error message. I tried uninstalling/reinstalling again and again, and I also tried deleting the appropriate registry entries after uninstalling the game. But to no avail...when reinstalled the game would show the same behavior - main menu would come up, but RTW would quit when trying to load any game. Anyone here ever experience this?? What's going on here, and how can I correct it? Many thanks in advance for any help.
