Default Papal states: a very big bastard!!! (SS V6.2)

    hi! all!

I play as kingdom of France in SS 6.2. I am very surprised about the attitude of the papal states.
In fact, they attac venice and genoa at the begin of the game. Because of their attac, they excummunited genoa and venice and those 2 factions got very bad relationship with all others catholic faction...

Now, the papal states got all italian regions, and they attac me at Marseilles... i am ecommunited...
In 5 turns, all my neighboors attacked me and all my relationship with others cathoilic factions are "abysimal"...

I have killed the pope so many times with my assasin, but even if we elect a french cardinal, the papal states continu to attac me and i have all europe against me...

What can i do? Is it normal?

I did not say it one day, but i must admit that it is easier to play as Bizantine Empire cause they don't care about papal states...

Seems weird, you should have made an alliance with the pope the sooner as possible though IMO (turn 1-2). This is the safest way to proceed, this and fighting muslims/pagans (but DO NOT FIGHT muslims/pagans allied with the pope because result will also end by the pope dislinking you.... so in any case make an alliance with the pope ASAP).

But you are right, playing as Byz; i take some pleasure at taking Roma and all the italian peninsula
Most catholics won't love me but the HRE loves me at least (they make excellent allies for Byz, and this said you can re-create the old Roman empire.. just a joke of course)

Wow, an aggressive Pope. I have to say, I've never seen the Pope act aggressively while in Italy. When I moved the Papal States to the Holy Lands as part of a real estate deal which let me have Rome, they got booted out and conquered a 7-8 province Empire around the Caucasus, with their Capital at Astrakhan .

But seriously, your best bet is to try to hold your borders, take the Pope's provinces, then gift him a region far, far away, perhaps Jerusalem or something. Then you can watch him try to repel stack after stack of Jihading Fatimids & Turks!

    Jeeps!
Is this Gracul's 6.2 sub mod or Point Blank's 6.2RR/RC?
What difficulty level are you playing on?
I am playing as Poland with PB's sub mod on M/M, all the Catholics are behaving themselves, only England excomm for bashing Scotland. First Crusade declared at turn 39, infact its all a trifle boring, no doubt it will improve.
HRE are large already, but will have to attack me, the Franks or the Danes to go further.
Hungary will almost certainly fallout with Venice, but I have an alliance with Hungary for the now.
Pope not interested in Alliance with me, although he is allied with Sicily, Venice and Genoa.
The Crusader States and the Fatimids become Client Kingdoms, then crusade called on Jerusalem. What baffles me is that this does not result in an excommunication for the Crusaders

In 6.2 The papal states is too aggressive against italien factions. It is not very realistic that the papelstates is so trigger happy. My advice is to make allies with the pope. If that is too boring for you try to take advantage of other excommunicated factions (HRE often). Allies can help stop attacks from other catholic factions and you can then concentrate on the papalstates. Attack them when the pope is old and youl soon get a new one and get back in the fold. Or try a assasin. Remember that in the start of the game its often much easier to take on the papal states since they dont have any good unit production yet (only one city). Later on their roster is so good combined with the fact of their leader being the pope that breaking their onslaught is very difficult.

Never seen an aggressive pope except when given lands. They usually take Florence from Rebels at the start, but then behave in their territory.

When I was Sicilly the Pope attacked (back stabbed) me also. And I wasn't at war with one catholic faction or something. Very weird indeed.

In my French campaign they were extreamly aggresive to. They killed of sicily who had around 8 stacks, and then later attacked me. So i had to wipe them out and i got myself ceasefire and accepted into the church again by offering Rome back + 40k. Next time i'm sending him to the holy lands.

Or, perhaps, kill the pope and the papal states at the beginning? when they have just one city...

Kill the pope give you just more time. I have killed the pope 7 times. One, or two turns after, papal states attack me again!

Gift him Innsbruck so he can have a swiss retreat to look down upon the world and all shall be well. That and throw lots of money at him. As Genoa by turn 40 I had taken Rome and put him in the alps, where he acts as a shield against HRE, plus you can keep an eye on him... No more Papel Guard for him for a while...anyway...

$Money Honey$ the Popes loves his coin....

The new pope will probally be spawned near either their former capital or Rome.

Almost sure he will spawn at his position as Cardinal -> one of them is being elected. That happens when he is without homeland of curse.

In vanilla I took Rome (their only province) and killed several popes, they all respawned south of Rome.

for me, they usually only attack factions that they excommunicate, generally venice and the HRE. they have to attack other catholics to get excommunicated though, they don't just attack for no reason.

last game i was france, and the pope created the kingdom of italy. it had everything but sicily which was under catalan then spanish imperial influence.

Well...SeraphZ I dunno.... it seems in my 6.2 games it's a dice roll of which Italian factions gonna get popped and end up with a Mexican neck-tie. Naturally the player if Italian. However the attack seems to be a dice roll on turn and faction. The unfortunate recipients of the Pope's graces don't seem to be excommunicated when he attacks....

Really? If I play the Papal States, I excomminucate everyone by attacking them.
