Death Penalty-For or Against

So I'm back after settlin into school. Figures I have only one class, so I have a good bit of time to think.

We were debating in speech class(go figure we're already done with speeches and do debates now and play shrades) and it was centered on the death penalty.

So, there are many valid points for and against the death penalty, which is why it's so interesting.

I myself am undecided. Most are, as I stated there are great points for either way. The main for are as follows:

1- An eye for an eye. The penalty should fit the crime.

2- As a detterent, you are less likely to kill someone when the consequence may be death.

3- You shouldn't give that person another chance to kill.


The main against are as follows:

1- It's too costly.

2- Life in prison is a worse punishment.

3- Life in prison is punishment while the death penalty can be looked at as revenge.

4- Death row has too long of a waiting list.

Well I'm assuming it takes them a few minutes to arrive on scene if the damn killer is already in your house. That's more than enough time to shoot or stab you if you refuse to do anything about it...

I am very strongly for the death penalty. If you have done a horrible crime (rape, cold-blooded murder, etc), you should be killed. And I really don't think anyone feels that life in prison is worse than dying.

I think death and jail sentances are worth the risk for alot of criminals , especially jail.

I think they should bring back torture. Prison and death sentence clearly dosent stop anybody commiting crime. Torture does.

Punishment should not equal the crime. Punishment should make sure nobody else ever does it again.

If i was in charge of crime and punishment i would reduce crime by 99% fairly easy.

I tend to agree. Take speeding for example. What's more of a deterrant; a fine (and maybe some demerit points) or getting lashed by a cop on the side of a highway?

Molesters (i.e. pedophiles)
Murderers
Repeat felony criminals
Some politicians

Unfortunately, a lot of my ideas are socially unacceptable in Canada - but a guy can dream, can't he?

I agree with that one. I think the UK should bring back the death penalty but only for corrupt politicians, not joking.

Oh, I wasn't joking either. I have a problem with people who are elected (as a privelege) to represent the public in a publicly funded forum. There is no reason to take advantage of the privilege that has been given to a politician.

Rapists should have there genitals removed violently then raped violently with all kinds of very large blunt instruments e.g A baseball bat, Then executed after a few days of rape.

Molesters similar to the above but maybe let a Lion or Grizzly bear do the raping.

Murderer's should be handed over to the victims family and all laws removed allowing them to punish them in the way they see fit, Once they are finished if he is still alive he's handed back over to the goverment where torture continues eventually followed by execution.

I'm generally against the death penalty for the reason that if someone is executed who is later found to be innocent, then their life has already been lost and the state has essentially committed a crime itself. At least in a prison sentence although the person may never reclaim the lost time spent in prison, they are still able to live in freedom afterwards if later found innocent.

But what if the said person spends 20 years in prison before proven innocent. Or he gets life and he's innocent. Is this any worse?

For. It takes thousands of tax payer dollars to keep prisoner in for life alive. Executing them would be good for the economy. Instead of wasting electricity or injection, use a tree. If your going to execute someone, do it Green.
