    Default Nihilist

Recently i was asked by a priest (at my cousins baptism) if i was religulous. I said no and he asked me loads more questions about if i was an atheists or agnostic and some other stuff, but by the end he said i was a existential nihilist. I had no idea what it was until i looked it up, it basically means i believe that life has no meaning, is insignificant and without purpose.

Dose this make me a bad person ? I dont mean a criminal but morally wrong ?

Nonsense you can still give your life and others a purpose as your life's impact can go far beyond your own lifetime even if it's just a small thing. As far as I can tell you are a good person with a great sense of humor and a good head on her shoulders. There is nothing wrong with who you are just because some priest thinks you aren't fulfilling some divine mandate or destiny.

If you have gotten as far to ask this, you are not a Nihilist.

Interesting, the majority of my friend are like this and there all emos, are you an emo dude?
I believe in subjective idealism, which is almost opposite of existential nihilist. I always wonder why my friends and I are so different.

Depends if you believe morals exist or not. If you don't believe they exist then you aren't a morally bad person by your own judgment. Everyone is immoral to someone else. I tend to judge a person based on their actions, not their beliefs. You can be nihilist and still a good person, just don't expect many people to agree with nihilism. If that does accurately encapsulate your beliefs and wasn't just what the priest said.

That all sounds a bit harsh, but what I'm trying to say is that a belief in something doesn't make you immoral.

LOL alright, but I pretty much call everyone dude regardless of gender. Bottom line if you do believe there's no purpose in life weeeellllll then yeah you are a nihilist and it does not mean your bad, it just that you didn't find it yet like I did, but if you do or think life has something for ya then you not a nihilist. Simple as that.

it makes you a "not Nihilist"

    It doesn't matter.
all those "isms" are just labels
in the end they don't matter
what counts is what you do
and not what kind of label another person tries to put on you.

By the way what is the meaning of "emo"?

Well that is the fun part, you get to choose what you want to be and then work to fulfill that. I certainly cant answer that question for you, but you do not need to be a theist in order to avoid the pit of Nihilism. Find something you care about, find some people to help, find an adventure, create, explore, get laid, fall in love, learn, think, reach out. What matters in your life is your business, and so is whether or not you need a god to help you out.

Morals are independent of religion, there are good Atheists as well as bad religious folks..

Uh.. You do realize that a priest attributing you with some philosophical characteristics, which may not be correct in the first place, is not in any way similar to visiting a physician and receiving a diagnosis for a disease.. right?

They're.. two different types of consultations. One is real.. the other is more subjective and "not real."

If you're worried about it, go get your palms read, find someone with some extra tea-leaves or read your horoscope. The last person in the world qualified to give you qualified advice regarding your own individual state of mind is a philosopher. They'd be the first to tell you that too. I can respect someone who dedicates their life to their beliefs but.. the Priest was completely wrong in attributing those qualities to you, judging by your post. Most likely, he was trying to engage you in some sort of twisted "Why are we here?" arguments for his own purposes.

Sounds like the priest was just taking out his frustrations on you for whatever your reply was. Morality is basicly right and wrong so if you have to ask then obviously you care and are conscientious of things around you.

Leave it to the modder to perfect the works of the paid developers for no profit at all.

It doesn't make you neccessarily a 'bad person'.

Just another fish in the sea who really hasn't put an effort in forming a mature set of beliefs. By the picture in your avatar you look like a teenager, so I guess your situation is just normal.

I hope you know that you don't have to develop religious beliefs to have "mature beliefs".

Noodlegasm, you are not a bad person, we are who we are and the need the categorize ourselves and ascribe names and characteristics to our beliefs is not necessary. Plus you can have morals as a nihilist, but it doesn't seem like you are one anyway. I think the priest was trying to intimidate you in a way or just being nosy. I tend to think like an nihilist at times as well.

Don't let people get to you though Not on twc, in churches, or anywhere! Beliefs are personal and our own, we don't need to conform to a name or set of beliefs.

As said earlier, if you got as far as asking the question in the opening post, you're not what the priest guy is calling you.
In any case, there's a bit of an incongruity in what the guy said. "Existentialist nihilist" is a bit of a misnomer; both take the position that there is no "purpose" to human beings. But Existentialism takes this to mean that everything matters, and that we must, morally speaking, strive against our own absurdity and make our own purpose. Nihilism goes the opposite route, and is quite emo and bleak. You can't really be both.

    WELCOME to my life.
I too am pretty much an existancialist and nihillist.
I suggest you start reading some Nietsche for nihillism...and ALbert Camus, Jean Paul Sartre for existancialism. Learn about these philosophies...and understand that it actually means something
This sort of thinking doesn't mean that you doN't want to live or anything though. It's just being aware that we are prototypes, and we are living for nothing. Except for our human feelings.
"Therefore I am not in favour of raising any dogmatic banner. On the contrary, we must try to help the dogmatists to clarify their propositions for themselves. Thus, communism, in particular, is a dogmatic abstraction; in which connection, however, I am not thinking of some imaginary and possible communism, but actually existing communism as taught by Cabet, Dézamy, Weitling, etc. This communism is itself only a special expression of the humanistic principle, an expression which is still infected by its antithesis – the private system. Hence the abolition of private property and communism are by no means identical, and it is not accidental but inevitable that communism has seen other socialist doctrines – such as those of Fourier, Proudhon, etc. – arising to confront it because it is itself only a special, one-sided realisation of the socialist principle."

No. Morally, it is the fairest, if you do moral deeds simply because they are moral.
