Default A memorial / epitaph for Calvin

    CALVIN
    28.4.75 - 28.10.09
Head man of the Eagle Standard, key Roma Surrectum (2) developer and a true Total War Centre Community Man

Today, at 6:43pm, I logged onto the RS sub-forum. I saw a notice, and not knowing Calvin’s situation well, thought that from the thread name he had resigned from the team. But I read the OP. It was no metaphor. He really had died.
    From pneumonia. In his sleep.

It’s only been a few hours, and yet already literally hundreds have left touching condolences and RIP messages on his profile and on the notice thread in the RS forum. And so, to dedicate Calvin’s lasting touch on so many members of TWC, I want to show several things.

I want to show as many of the ‘farewell’ posts as I can, especially those that have made an impression on me…
I want to show everyone what he did for TWC and how he helped make everyone else’s experiences here so much more enjoyable…
And I want to quote some passages and sayings that have always given me strength when I hear of either people dying or going through very, very hard times.

Dvk901 - I'm very sorry to announce that our good friend and trait guru, Calvin has passed away. He got pneumonia and died in his sleep today.
The RS2 team wishes the best, and prays for his family in their time of sadness.

We will all miss him a lot.
Alavaria - My condolences to his family and friends.

    Calvin will be missed dearly.
Mr Blackadder - This is extremely sad news. He was way too young to die.
I suggest we all put his name in our sig, as a kind of respect sign to him.

    May he rest in peace.
Tone - What an awful bit of news. He was such a great member of the team.

My thoughts and prayers are with his fiancée too.
cherry funk - He was the best, always helpful and full of great ideas.

    A very sad day
sinople - It's not the kind of news we like to hear there, he was a important stele of the house and by far too young.

"Je te souhaite un bon repos" (I wish you a pleasant rest)
Justinian - No way, this can't be happening

I never saw that coming. You will be missed Calvin.
Theoroshia - J'espere Calvin trouve la paix. C'est la vie, mais n'est pas bon. (I hope Calvin finds peace. That’s life, but it isn’t nice.)

Harry Lime - Calvin was such a nice bloke, one of my friends here on TWC, I worked with him as a moderator and magistrate. He was brave, loyal, loved his family and fiancée with a rare devotion and will be missed by us all. My sincere condolences to his family and loved ones. They must be devastated at such a terrible loss.

Elendil of Númenor - I am utterly shocked. Who would think how thin a thread our lives are balanced on?
Rest in Peace, Calvin. You will always be remembered by all of us as a great member, a good person and a dear friend.

PSEUDO ROMANUS - My God! I have no words. He was so excited about his new life with his fiancée! I'm so sorry for his family and especially her. Rest in peace, Calvin. You will never suffer again.

Noble Savage - Such a sad loss to TWC , his family and the world.
After I patronised him, we talked all of the time including an invite to see him before he moved to America. Such a genuine, talented and generous man.
    Gutted.

Apple - One of the kindest persons I had the chance to meet, always looking forward, especially towards his new life with his bride to be.
He will be greatly missed by all who he loved.
My condolences to his family and fiancé. May he rest in peace.

Nazgűl Killer - Wow... Calvin's dead? That's really... Just... Wow... Can't think of anyone less deserving.

Monarchist - I managed to get a word in with Calvin just two weeks ago. He seemed perfectly healthy and happy to me, and he gave me a little smile, and an indication of his Christianity. This is truly a devastating loss for T.W.C.
Pray for him, if you are religious; remember him if you are not. Though I didn't know him, or of him, for very long, he gave me such joy with his kind words. It almost seems like a joke that so beautiful and bright-minded a person should be dead.

Abbews - Even though I didn't know you so much, you were an really friendly and good guy.
My thoughts goes to you tonight, may you rest in peace.
    Only the good die young.

Simplemind07 - No words can describe losing someone, I myself lost 3 of my friends, but one thing is certain, we will never say good bye, but see you later on the other side

Monarchist - I will offer a prayer to you, for I know that you watch us from on high. Say "hello" to Osceola for us, unless you are too distracted by the bright lights and clouds! Your kind words to me shall never be forgotten, dear fellow. God can only smile on your entrance into His Kingdom.

Harry Lime - TWC will always be honoured that you made this forum your online home for the last two years. You will be remembered and were always regarded with great respect for your courage, loyalty, integrity and devotion to your family and fiancée. Our deepest condolences.

    *****

Calvin was always a proud member of the RS(2) development team, and well known for how hard he worked on it and his skills for putting traits into the game. I am certain at least parts of, if not the whole game, will be dedicated to him.

For the last two years, he has turned the ES from a pamphlet to a powerhouse in the TWC, and one of the most important components. His guidance has insured a constant audience and I even began to work for him just his last issue. Without Calvin, there would be no ES. It's that simple.

And even though few were addressed to me, whether it be in an ES Editorial or a short post talking about codes for RS2, he was always positive, upbeat and productive. Everyone remembers him positively, and the light hearted thoughtfulness he put into every post made the experiences so much more enjoyable for every single user of TWC.

    *****

Gilgamesh - What you seek, you will never find.
For when the Gods created man,
They let death be his lot.
    Eternal life lay with hell.
Let your everyday be full of joy,
Love the child that holds your hand,
Let your wife delight in your embrace,
For these alone are the concerns of humanity.

Juba, Gladiator - I will see you again soon… but not yet… not yet…

Maximus, Gladiator - Death smiles at us all. All a man can do is smile back.

Abraham Lincoln - I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save.
I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.

    *****

That’s it then. The weirdest thing is… he can’t hear us. But for the Christians amongst us, he is walking straight through Heaven’s pearly gates, but I personally believe I will see him again, as do many here at TWC… say hello to my friend’s dad, who died just this summer before the boy’s exams. I think of you both, and your families…

    Peace…

If my French translation abilities have not selected the word of your choice, then alert me and I'll fix it.
There's still time to get this into the ES, right? I'm sure they could use it.
My god... if he managed to do this much on an internet forum, then how great a guy must he have been in (real) life? ...
so odd using that phrase now... 'real life' ...

Maybe this video's soundtrack might be appropriate...

Beautiful piece. I definitely hope it gets into the ES, especially Calvin did a lot to grow it.

The name "Justinian" isn't in red. Just thought you might want to know that.

I guess that puts a burden to all of us to see that his vision is carried out.
    Very nice tribute there.

Calvin was a great man, although he wasn't my friend but I wish I was. my condolences to his family and his friends and for his American fiance. losing great members from time time makes us deeply think about death and the fact is whatever great live we have and enjoy we aren't immortals.

"WE WILL SMITE THE INVADERS FROM OUR SKIES! Though they sweep over our lands like the sands of winter, never again will we bow before them; never again endure their oppression; never again endure their tyranny. We will strike without warning and without mercy, fighting as one hand, one heart, one soul. We will shatter their dreams and haunt their nightmares, drenching our ancestors' graves with their blood. And as our last breath tears at their lungs; as we rise again from the ruins of our cities...they will know: Helghan belongs to the Helghast." -Scholar Visari

I never knew him but the loss of someone young and talented with everything to look forward to is a sad loss, R.I.P. Calvin
Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there, wondering, fearing, doubting, dreaming.
