    Default The Ultra-Secret

How do you think Britain's not cracking Enigma would have affected the war?

    Bear in mind several points:

1.) In many cases, allied intelligence knew about German orders before they even reached their intended receipienta.

2.) The Americans got to use Ultra-Secret knowledge as well.

3.) Stalin had spies feeding him ultra-secret information.

4.) The Germans never suspected the serious breach in enigma, right up to the end.

    Discuss.

We could well have lost the Battle of the Atlantic. With that, Britain would be out of the war

everyone would now be probably saying High Hitler...
"WE WILL SMITE THE INVADERS FROM OUR SKIES! Though they sweep over our lands like the sands of winter, never again will we bow before them; never again endure their oppression; never again endure their tyranny. We will strike without warning and without mercy, fighting as one hand, one heart, one soul. We will shatter their dreams and haunt their nightmares, drenching our ancestors' graves with their blood. And as our last breath tears at their lungs; as we rise again from the ruins of our cities...they will know: Helghan belongs to the Helghast." -Scholar Visari

Wasn't it some Polish guy who cracked it?

The Polish broke the first Enigma code but the Enigma system was updated several times throughout the war. The work done by the Polish could then be used to break the next generation of Enigma, then some British soldiers also managed to capture an Enigma machine (several where captured throughout the war) which helped even more.

    Swedish mathematician Arne Beurling
also deciphered a similar system for the German teleprinter communication.

It was literally hundreds of mathematicians, who all helped. To my knowledge, it was a Cambridge Don who did a lot of the "genius" stuff.

However, yes, the Poles laid the groundwork, as they made the first moves towards the ultimate laying bare of enigma.

Would definately make a huge difference for the Battle of the Atlantic, it was the breaking of these codes that allowed Britain to slowly turn the tide of that battle and put an end to what was called "the happy times" from the u-boat crews.

But it wasn't just one set of codes. Army, navy and air forces used different set of codes and navy changed the Engima machine they used somepoint during the war. (was codenamed Shark I think).
But yea the groundwork for breaking those codes was work dones by the Poles.
Any community that gets its laughs by pretending to be idiots will eventually be flooded by actual idiots who mistakenly believe that they are in good company.
