Default Installing new RC/RR compilation on a Win7 64bit system

I thought it might be helpful to add this prologue:

Prepping your Windows 7 system for Stainless Steel and other mods
    -----------------------------------------------------------------

As the discussion below shows, it's possible to set up your system so that you can avoid a lot of the hassle that is associated
with installing Stainless Steel, and especially large sub-mods thereof.

    1) Turn of the User Account Control.

    Go to the Control Panel.
    Click on User Accounts
Click on Change User Account Control settings
Slide the slider to the bottom.
Click OK and reset the PC.

    -------------------------------------------------

    2) Installing M2TW / Kingdoms

You can choose to install M2TW/Kingdoms and mods in a different folder ot the default one.
Choosing a shorter file path, eg C:/Games\M2TW could save a lot of hassle if your mod has long filenames.

    -------------------------------------------------

    3) Establishing permissions

Open your windows explorer to show the program files folders.
Open the one you have placed SEGA/Medieval II Total War in.
    Navigate to the MIITW folder.
    Right click on the folder
    Click on properties
    Click on Security
    Click on Users
    Click on Edit
    Tick the relevant boxes
    Click on OK

    ------------------------------------------------

    4) Always check the properties of any folder and files you intend modding to ensure they have had the read-only
    attribute removed.

    ----------------------------------------------------

However if you're going with the default install path ....

The new 2 megaupload install files should address most of the problems mentioned below.
So try installing them direct rather than using the temp folder option.

However if that fails (not that I have reason to believe it will, but just in case,) try the method below.

How I installed Real Combat / Real Recruitment compilation into Stainless Steel 6.1 on a 64-bit Windows 7 system
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Having tried and failed to install the compilation several times I decided upon a new approach.

    0) Turn off UAC and make the Medieval II folder readable
(ie change the properties of the folder and all files inside to be able to be written to.)

    1) Install, as per usual, M2TW, kingdoms, (with or without 1.5 patch), Stainless Steel 6.0 pts 1+2 and the 6.1 patch.

    2) Check this installation works.

    3) Place the main RC/RR compilation files (1 .exe and 3 data) into a new folder on the hard drive.
What you call it is irrelevant. (No that doesn't mean you call it "irrelevant".)

    4) Run the installer .exe and change the destination location to the name of the folder.

    5) This will take time to run. Whilst it's running remove the file_tasks.bat file and stick it on the desktop.

    6) At some point you'll get a notification about the pike filename problem. This you can skip.
Hopefully it will be sorted in another version of the installer files.

    7) When the installation finishes, the Program Compatibility Assistant will pop up and tell you there was a problem with the installation
and do you want to re-install to fix it. Politely decline the offer.

    8) Copy the data and then the mods folders into the Medieval II folder.
When asked about copy and replace tick the wee box about doing this for all files, there's rather a lot to do manually!

It'll grumble about needing administrator permission, but we'll assume you're the admin on your system otherwise you'll
need to sort that out before you begin. Tell it to continue.

Eventually it'll finish copying the thousands of files.

Now copy the file_tasks.bat into the Med II folder and run it.

    9) Don't try and run the game yet as it'll fall over once it gets past the splash screen.

    10) How apply the latest and best Hotfix.

    11) You'll need up un-7zip it, then copy the data and mods folders over as above.

    12) Then copy the file_tasks2.bat file into the med II folder and run it.

    13) Now insert the kingdoms DVD into the drive and click on the stainless steel icon.

and if you've been good, the prog will start and play nicely.

Yes microsoft doesn't allow longer filenames

W7 doesn't even allow you to rename desktop icons if you turn UAC off!

    Rozanov:

Thanks for posting this! This should be very helpful to those having problems.

--though I must be a rare case since I'm running a Win7(64) rig and have had ZERO problems installing Kingdoms, SS 6.1, RR/RC + hotfixes. I've never had to use temporary install folders for the mod or the hotfixes, just pointed the installers and let fly. Must just be the luck of the draw.

Windows 7's UAC is much more granular than Vista, and allows for much more flexibility, but likely still some opportunities for issues if you install into the default Program Files destinations. Possibly suggesting people install the original game somewhere outside of this (c:/games/MTW, etc...) would result in fewer issues for Vista and Win7 players.

Changing the destination for the install has been suggested.
(But it does require the entire game to be installed in a new directory.)

Not everyone will want to go down that route, I don't know enough about the way W7 works to know if installing outside the Program Files (x86) folder makes any difference.
I assumed (perhaps wrongly) that it tells the system the programs have to be run under some form of compatibility.

Also some people will not necessarily want to spend 2-3 hours installing M2TW/Kingdoms/SS/RC/RR + patches compilation from scratch.

Why some of us have to use the temp folder method and others don't I have no idea. All I know is that's how I got it to work on my system.
If it helps others do the same if all else fails, then it's worthwhile posting it.

Installing outside of the Program Files (x86) doesn't hurt anything.
Your method is good; I simply moved my entire install to c:\M2\Medieval II Total War\ then installed RR/RC; this also bypasses the long filename problem.
And apparently the 256-character limit for filenames is not windows specifically but a result of the hard drive filesystem, and NTFS has been around since 2000 at least. Even windows version one million will have this problem unless the do away with NTFS.

M2TW (And RTW before it) is extremely friendly to running in a non-installed state outside of the Program Files folders. I've copied entire folders from one drive to another (when i upgraded my system recently) and the entire game will run no matter what folder its in. Installing the game from scratch simply allows a means for windows to uninstall it later.

Also, as most mods provide their own shortcuts, knowing how to build new shortcuts with proper command arguments isn't necessary either.

I think a lot depends on how you set the system up.
Turning off UAC and not having it turn on again helps.

I found I had to set up User privileges for the relevant folders before I could get the prog to save the system.log file for SS.
Also needed to change them to allow me to save a change to the SS.cfg file.

The system will make it look like you've changed the attributes to remove the read only attribute of a folder,
but unless you have UAC off and have given yourself the necessary privileges they don't stay changed.

(I've only had W7 for a week so am having to relearn all the stuff about UAC that I learnt in Vista and then forgot about!)

Even if you have UAC on and you want to change the SS cfg file or any other file, can't you copy it to the desktop, make your changes, save while on the desktop, then drop it back in and let it overwrite?

    BvM

re making changes - well I was editing the .cfg in notepad++
I renamed the original and tried to save the changes with the proper name and the OS would not allow it.
Told me I did not have relevant permissions and to see the administrator about it.
(I'm the administrator or so I thought, but apparently not.)
Had to go into UAC and turn it off and make the other changes to allow changes before it would let me save it.
(That may be over-kill, but it worked.)

(Didn't think to save to desktop and then copy it over )

(I suspect it even messed up me saving my game - bit grim after 90+ turns and you find it never made it to the save game folder.
Possibly because it had the same filename?)

Note that there is a new set of 2 Megaupload files which should be very simple to install and not be subject to the issues which have made installation difficult previously.

Will try out the megaupload files later overnight when they don't count towards my download limit

    Default win7

Did a quick search for it and couldnt find it. Anyways, installed Windows7 (64) and then downloaded everything again and ran the batch file for the latest rr/rc. When trying to launch I get "windows cannot find kiongdoms.exe". Any ideas?

btw: when installing m2tw gold edition I only installed teutonic campaign, was told I didnt need anything off of the kingdoms expansion disk.

    Soulson,
Pardon my bluntness, but I take it you have read the rest of this thread, before your last post!

Anyway, if you have it did not work, I would PM Rozanov, pretty sure he is going to be able to help you.

can you let us know exactly what isn't working -

also does your kingdoms scenario work OK?

make sure to remove read-only from stainless steel folder after install and try running the batch file again.

Ok so I finally got it working. Re downloaded everything making sure I did everything mentioned as above. Now I think I am bugged though. I start off with my TO army but a much smaller army at that. Only max 76 spearman, 61 archers, 63 heavy infantry. is my EDU messed up lol?
