I've always liked the British word "kit" to describe a soldier's standard issues. It sounds small, compact and lightweight.. completely unlike a 60# rucksack.

But, what was the "kit" of the Ancient Soldier? I've seen several bits and pieces on that, over the years, but, I have never really looked at it in depth. I'm sure some of you have. So, that's why I am asking such an informed group of people!

Of particular interest is, of course, Roman and Greek standard issues for their troops. Specialists would be interesting as well as any other classical or ancient warrior's accoutrement. (Sharp, pointy things are obvious but, what they cleaned their toenails with which doubled as can-openers is not. )

Resource links are very welcome as well! Thanks in advance!
