[Discov] Phoenician remains found at Málaga airport
Drainage work in the construction of the second runway has been moved as a result

The oldest Phoenician remains yet to be found in Málaga have been unearthed at the airport as land was moved as part of the construction of the second runway.
Archaeological work is now underway at the site, coordinated by the Culture Department of the Junta de Andalucía, and the Spanish Airports Authority, AENA, has given an undertaking to look after and protect the historical heritage at the site.
The find was in an area known as ‘La Rebanadilla’, covers a 3.4 hectare plot to the right of the Guadalhorce River, and had been buried under tons of earth. It seems the site had been occupied between the 8th and 7th centuries B.C, earlier than the find 40 years ago at the nearby El Cerro del Villar.
Excavations continue and AENA has now moved drainage work for the new runway more than 700 metres away.

Re: Phoenician remains found at Málaga airport
Very interesting.
The Phoenician influence in Iberia has been underappreciated for years, I hope this starts to change soon. They came here before the Romans, and as such, they left a huge footstep in the History of our Peninsula, and even in the Portuguese and Castillan languages (these two more than any others).
There are thousands of words in Portuguese (the language I know the most, so I'll stick to it) that have origin in the semitic languages the Phoenicians spoke. And in southern Portugal, for example, most town's name have origin in those languages. The Romans, Moors and Modern Portuguese that eventually settled up this region renamed many cities, but many of those cities were renamed to names that could be more easily pronounced by these people, but still had origins in Phoenician and Iberian languages.
Odemira, Alcácer do Sal, Vila Nova de Milfontes, Aljezur, and many more, are examples of that.
