Re: Units / landscape contrast
You could probably try reducing the unit_ambient_reduce_proportion number in descr_battlemap_lighting_and_fog_control.txt file. I think there's also an alternative lighting file in the "Important Stuff" folder which you could try out.

Re: Units / landscape contrast
I also have installed Barbarian Invasion so I have two shortcuts for Roma Surrectum, one for BI, one for vanilla.
It looks like configuration files ar different, this means that I play somehow different games if I launch vanilla RS shortcut and BI RS shortcut?
Which one should I play in this case? I think BI executable and config files are improved over vanilla, but which one you have tested, guys?
EDITED:
I changed to these in "descr_battle_map_lighting_and_fog_control.txt" and the lights fixed somehow:
unit_min_light_intensity 1.5
unit_max_light_intensity 1.7
unit_ambient_reduce_proportion 0.50
The parameters in "lighting" section also can increase the contrast between the terrain and unit but they may give a bit "arcadish" look if changed too much. Anyway, it looks like the RS only use the config files in main folder DATA directory, not BI DATA...
New "unselected" look:

Re: Units / landscape contrast
In the meantime I discovered that the original "descr_battle_map_lighting_and_fog_control.txt" file in Barbarian Invasion gives the best lights/contrast for the units. From a high view they still have colors and don't look the same anymore.
