Based on my further research (with a danish Ma Historian at University of Denmark) into Scandinavian units and recruitment (and administrative behaviour). I'm planning to change a few things regarding Danish and Norwegian roster to give Denmark a few more pleasant units, while making the Norwegian roster "complete". This may also free up some totally unhistorical unit slots. I may also have to change some unit descriptions:
Unit descriptions:
Peasant Spearmen (Vanilla?), renamed to Karlar.
Karlar, meaning a men. Karlar are freemen, basically made up of common farmers
called Bondir. From the local thing, they hold loyalty to a Herse(Chieftain), Hauld farmer or Vaepner,
who would again swear loyalty to a riddere(knight), Lendman(Storman) or King.
They were not part of a tenant, and stood more freely then any other European
farmer. As a farmer one had the right to pay mannebot(fines) for some
types of offences, rather than physical punishment. For a minor offence was fine
man 3 mark or the equivalent 321.48 grams of silver.
These trained men are armed with a simple spear and a round shield.
Viking Raiders (Vanilla), renamed to Hauld Drengr or Hold Drengr.
Hauld (or Hold) is a head farmer whose family had been on a farm for six
generations or more. Higher status as a free man, was only acquired if they were
to become Herse (Chieftain) or was taken into nobility. As a Hauld one had the right to pay mannebot(fines) for some types of offences, rather
than physical punishment. For a minor offence was 6 mark or the equivalent
643.14 grams of silver. These men were the head farmers of a
collections of minor farmers, and held considerable authority within the local
thing, and therefor could assemble a household of dedicated drengr (warriors).
These men are armed with a one handed war axe, mail and a sturdy round shield.
Leišangr (Raaka)
Leišangr is a form of Norse army designed for war in foreign realms, consisting of
common farmers that are levied into the army. According to law, they are equipped
with a spear and shield, helmet and an occasional aventail. Levy armies form the
backbone of Norse armies as professional troops were scarse and seldom needed
thus the quality of leišangr is better than an average European levy. Leišangr are
capable of forming shield wall, which was a typical form of fighting during the earlier
Viking days.
Leišangr are equipped with a spear and shield, helmet and an occasional aventail.
Landvarnarmenn (Raaka)
Landvarnarmenn is a local special army consisting of local town folk and urban farmers
levied into the army. They are equipped with a spear and shield, helmet and an aventail and
wear padded armour. Levy armies form the backbone of Norse armies as professional
troops were scarse and seldom needed thus the quality of landvarnarmenn is better
than an average European levy. These men were mostly used for defencive purposes,
as well as supplement for bolstering crusades into heathen lands.
Landvarnarmenn are equipped with a spear and shield and wear aventail and padded
armour.
Lįsboga Landvarnarmenn (Raaka)
Lįsboga landvarnarmenn are common men, town folk and urban farmers levied into the
army. Wearing padded armour and equipped with a 'lįsboga', a crossbow,
landvarnarmenn are usually called up in the time of distress. Norse medieval levy
armies are of better quality than their European counterparts however they cannot
match professional units under any circumstances. These men were mostly used for
defencive purposes, as well as crusaders into heathen lands.
Lįsboga landvarnarmenn are equipped with a crossbow and a sword and are wearing
padded armour.
Sverdstafs Landvarnarmenn (Raaka)
Sverdstafs landvarnarmenn is a levy unit consisting of men with battle experience.
Armed with a 'sverdstafs', a sword-staff, a Scandinavian polearm coming in many
shapes but was essentially composed of a pole and a sword. These men were mostly
used for defencive purposes, as well as crusaders into heathen lands.
Sverdstafs landvarnarmenn are equipped with a sword-staff and wearing padded
armour with an occasional coat of plates.
Vaepnere
Meaning "armoured men". These men of the Hird made up the lower nobility of Norse
and Danish professional warrior class. Since the early middle ages, they served as table
servants for the higher nobility at the kings table. During the high middle ages, they
took up arms and armour, and fought as Riddere (knights) or man-at-arms for the higher
nobility. Others remained lesser landowners with the title of Hauld or Vaepner, and
enforced authority on a local level only. As a Vaepner one had the right
to pay mannebot(fines) for some types of offences, rather than physical punishment.
For a minor offence was 6-12 mark or the equivalent 643.14 to 1286.28 grams of silver
depending on social status and local income .
Vaepnere are armed with a sword, a strong round shield and mail. They may upgrade to
plate if they can afford it.
Gestir
Low born professional warriors acting as a kind of police force, doing errands for the
king, executing his justice and collecting his taxes. Their name Gestir (Guests) came
from the fact that they were well known as the unwelcomed guest in peoples houses.
Gestir are equipped with a couple of javelins, an axe, a shield and are wearing mail.
Despite the fierce rivalry between the Hirds different corporations, these are ferocious
professional assault infantry and very loyal to their sovereign.
Gestir are equipped with javelins, an axe and a shield in melee and are wearing mail.
Stormenn
Stormenn, the 'Great Men' were the cream of the Norse nobles. They are extremely well
equipped, matching European standards, and are equipped with a sword, a shield
and wear half plate. There are only a couple of hundred dubbed knights in Norway
and due to the terrain Stormenn were not experienced in mounted combat preferring
to fight on foot in many occasions. As a Lendman (later: Baron) one had the right to pay
mannebot(fines) for some types of offences, rather than physical punishment. For a
minor offence was 12-24 mark or the equivalent 1286.28 to 2572.56 grams
of silver depending on the noble status.
Stormenn are wearing half plate and are wielding bone crushing maces.
Svenner
Svenner, 'boys' are squires aspiring to the rank of knighthood. They are lightly
armoured, wearing mail and wielding spear and are excellent in running down
routers and skirmishers. Due to difficult terrain and dense forests, Norse are not
experienced in mounted warfare. They prefer imported continental horse breeds
when mounted.
Svenner are mounted nobles equipped with a spear, a shield and wearing mail. They use
longsword as secondary weapon.
Riddere
Riddere are the dubbed knights of Norway. They are extremely well equipped,
matching European standards, and are equipped with a sword, a shield and wear
half plate. Scandinavian terrain, many lakes and dense forest are not optimal for
mounted fighting. Continental war horses were used thus the inexperienced Riddere
are seldom a match for their European counterparts. As a late medieval knight
one had the right to pay mannebot(fines) for some types of offences, rather than
physical punishment. For a minor offence was fine man 12-24 mark or the equivalent
1286.28 to 2572.56 grams of silver depending on the noble status.
Ridder are wearing half plate and wielding lances. They use longswords as secondary
weapons.
