Retraining units and war vetrans

I often will have a bodyguard unit or a lower nobility unit that has a lot of rank, but only a few people in that unit. So their almost useless in the game, not to mention the battlefield. I don't want them to get slaughtered in battle, so could someone list the buildings needed to upgrade/retrain certain units? Just a basic list that more and more people can add to.

All I know is that the settlement must be able to recruit the unit to add more men during retraining.

Over time the bodyguard will recover casualties.

You have to just wait a few turns for your general's people to come back. If it is a unit that you can recruit you can retrain it in castle,city,etc.ONLY

IF YOU CAN MAKE THAT EXACT TYPE OF UNIT IN THE SETTLEMENT THAT YOU ARE RETRAINING IN.

Bodyguard units take time after a battle to reach full strength. That is the trade off - they don't need a building to retrain but heal slowly. Just let them rest in a settlement for a while to heal up. If you really need to use a half-trained Bodyguard unit then protect it well....
