The spears. Oh god. Mostly every unit has spears except sword hoplites. I wish RS2 dont come out with that mistake.

The mistake of having spears? I don't get it. You think there's too many spear-wielding units in the game, or that they're poorly done?
If spears ain't your thing, maybe you should try a different Total War era, because the only factions that don't use mainly spear tactics are the romans and gauls.
Too many use of spears.
In this game Gauls and Romans also weild too many spears
Swords were more expensive and took longer to make than spears. As Acid Dent said, most cultures used mostly spears.
I would have liked a spear armed auxilary for the Romans in 1.5, but I think there will be one in 2.0. Beside that, I hope you can enjoy a game with more spears than swords, because it be a tavesty to not play RS2 when it comes out![]()
Erm...ye do realize that the spear was the main weapon during the time period? It would be like playing Call of Duty and saying you don't like the guns.

you sir, make no sence.![]()
I had to read this ... at least five times, and I still don't get it. ... Wha? I feel my IQ lowering trying to understand this. It's like one of my buddies who told me his redneck cousin at dinner said, "Pertenear cat lehrpin". I still have no idea what that means either ...I cant live in a day where I can at least play with cavalry for once.

why don't you play a horse-rich faction, like G. Brittanicus suggested.
I personally, for one, do not favor them very much - they are at times difficult to control and get killed very easily.

I think he means he can't live a day without playing with cavalry at least once.
I tend to use infantry-heavy armies, so much so the only cavalry would be two units of generals' bodyguards. I love the fact that melee cavalry has a serious problem fighting with anything in my army but the archers.

Good call Ala, probably true. It seems with the anti-spear and pro-cavalry you should try some Medi2 mods like Stainless Steel. Very popular one; lots of heavy cavalry, sword 'n board boys and axes galore. Even in that mod I generally use my first line as heaviest spearmen until I get professional heavy infantry, but you by no means have to adhere to that. It's just a cost effective way, and, well, I like spears...![]()

And to many spears... Do you know that when you click on an enemy formation while pressing ALT your troops will engage with their secondary weapon (if they have one). With most of the units this is some form of a sword (or mace,...). During that period, the spear was mostly the primary weapon. It's just a fact

I suppose the OP is disappointed in the fact that his glorious horse charges are being mauled by infantry formations -wielding spears, no less.
This seems like a no-brainer, but certainly an expectation that gets developed by watching too many movies.
A better topic and title would have been: "What ruined the tactic for me: --and forced me to develop a better plan to take out spear wielding units in this game"
Hi in RS2
There will be spears, swords, axes, clubs, iron maces, arrows all sorts of fun killing tools.

I wonder why so many people are falling for this honeypot thread.
Well, at least Medieval American learned a valuable skill to preserve pila. And I hope Mustache Man understands that he suffers from Spearophobia and that he should avoid RTW like the plague.

As to the alt-click trick, I'm sure there are oodles of other "hidden" commands that are rarely used or even known. It's the problem with such a clean and obvious game design that these extra things get lost in the simple business of moving armies around and fighting battles.![]()
