Default How to get Papal States without mods/cheats etc.

I have been playing Medieval 2 Total War since it first came out. I have already unlocked all of the unlockable factions(without mods), but I want the Papal States, so that I can have the Pope, because the idiots keep on calling crusades on my Citadel(Toulouse) I am playing as the french right now and I want to know do I have to wipe out all the other catholic factions to obtain the Papal States, I have already wiped out Spain, Portugal, Milan, and am working on wiping out Sicily, Holy Roman Empire and England.

Papal States is playable through modding only.

You can play the Papal States by making them playable in your descr_strat file, which is modding. It is the only way to do.

But you can't control the pope. You can use him as a general like any faction leader, but you can't call crusades or excommunicate someone.

The positive side is that every catholic that attacks you is excommned and that no crusades against you can be called. You can control inquisitors and use them to eliminate unwanted persons like kings, spies, assassins etc.

Playing the PS is very boring.
Officer to a soldier who refuses to fight: There three types of soldiers who don't have to fight. They are called KIA, MIA and POW and you are not one of them.

    Tosa will be missed.

As you said, you can excommunicate factions by attacking them. You can call crusades, but the chance of succesful request is the same than when playing as other factions.
My experience of playing by Papal States was from Stainless Steel, but I can say that it was one of my funniest campaigns as long as it lasted.

I already knew how to mod it. I just did not want to have a chance of messing up my game files. When you modded your game(s) did you mess up any part of your game, such as did it go any slower or skip, because that is the only reason I have not modded it.

Making the Papal States playable by modding descr_strat can't mess up your game unless you do it very very badly. It's nearly impossible to fail at it.
