Re: Your general tips to get around a CTD
Given the description, a possible way around might be to turn on/off follow enemy units, which sometimes works.
Another possibility is a town is revolting, in which case applying the revolt CTD fix would work. When a town revolts to another faction, it apparently looks for recruitable units. If none are available. it CTDs. So the fix consists of adding some hideously overpriced units which the AI will never recruit and thus spam, but which are recruitable at each level of government building. They're recognisable as low level units that take 3 turns to train, and cost 33K denarii to recruit. Peasants serve this purpose in vanilla.
Another common CTD is the reinforcements bug, but it's probably not the case here. When you besiege a town, and reinforcements attack your besieging army, and you destroy both the reinforcements and the town garrison, it CTDs when you get the chance to choose to occupy, enslave or exterminate. The solution for that is either to autoresolve (autoresolve doesn't trigger CTD) or to leave one of the enemy armies alive.
I presume you have -show_err in your shortcut.
Edit: see this thread for a savegame-compatible revolt hotfix. Just back up your files before editing.
