Default Your general tips to get around a CTD

Hi fellas. Long time Ex Realism player/Quinn worshipper. I was wondering if you could let me in on any hints and tips you have to get around a CTD.

It happens around 200 BC on the Greek Cities turn. It crashes before i can see what they are trying to do. Should i use force diplomacy to somehow change fate? Or perhaps declare war on them/ bribe them etc.

Are there any other technical tips i could use? I have one save about 8 turns previous to this one that i guess i could fall back on, but that might mean fighting about 4 epic battles again.

Thanks for your help. Sorry if i should have posted this in the tech help section.

Given the description, a possible way around might be to turn on/off follow enemy units, which sometimes works.

Another possibility is a town is revolting, in which case applying the revolt CTD fix would work. When a town revolts to another faction, it apparently looks for recruitable units. If none are available. it CTDs. So the fix consists of adding some hideously overpriced units which the AI will never recruit and thus spam, but which are recruitable at each level of government building. They're recognisable as low level units that take 3 turns to train, and cost 33K denarii to recruit. Peasants serve this purpose in vanilla.

Another common CTD is the reinforcements bug, but it's probably not the case here. When you besiege a town, and reinforcements attack your besieging army, and you destroy both the reinforcements and the town garrison, it CTDs when you get the chance to choose to occupy, enslave or exterminate. The solution for that is either to autoresolve (autoresolve doesn't trigger CTD) or to leave one of the enemy armies alive.

I presume you have -show_err in your shortcut.

Edit: see this thread for a savegame-compatible revolt hotfix. Just back up your files before editing.

Hmm, I think there's an existing integrated hotfix patch somewhere, which doesn't require modding knowledge to implement. Try the follow units trick first to see if it works.

i tried your "follow AI moves" suggestion and lo and behold the Greek Cities seemed to rebel/ctd when the map moved over a certain city (Pella iirc), so i did a Twelve Monkeys and got my own lady on the plane/"borrowed" the city from the Greeks, polished it up, cleaned out the rubbish and gave it back to them good as new. I used the force diplo to borrow it.

Nice work, both of you! (With a German assist from DoR. ) FWIW, the RTR guys taught me a new CTD fix that I'm going to work into the next version (this will be the...hmmm...third CTD fix incorporated into the mod).

It involves making sure there's >3 merc units available for recruitment at all times in all regions. Muizer was testing it out and it looks really promising.

Will there be an increase in cost for these units Quinn or will they be valued in a similar way to current mercs?

They'll be one step above peasant units and cost...hmmm...probably 5000 apiece or so. The whole point is to make sure they are _not_ recruited unless the game engine forces them to be.
