No, no third party software. I just made a backup copy of the Medieval 2 Total War folder by right clicking and copy/pasting it, that way I have a clean, unmodified backup of the game files in case something goes wrong and I installed this patch incorrectly.

Exactly what patch are you trying to install that's causing the problem? Is it a patch for the Vanilla M2 or the 1.5 patch for Kingdoms?

What patch version is your backup - 1.5 I'm guessing for Kingdoms. Are you sure you're applying the correct patch - Gold, non-Gold, Region specific, etc.?

    Good luck!
My Kingdoms is 1.4 before the patch, I'm trying to install the Kingdoms 1.5 patch for the US gold edition.

I use Vista and I've made doubly sure I installed the right patch.

Just to be sure - you're using Disc One of the Gold set to try to run Kingdoms? I'm sure you've checked but had to ask....

If the Kingdoms campaigns work perfectly well from the base 1.4 install but won't work after installing the patch then I'd say the patch is where you have the problem. Try downloading the patch from another mirror - maybe the patch you have is corrupted somehow.

    Good luck!

    Have you disabled the UAC?

    Have you tried this? http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=397636

I did both before installing it in C:\Games.

My install isn't in Program Files (my installation path is C:\SEGA\Medieval II Total War) and I run all .exes with administrator permissions.

I'd say you still need to disable the UAC. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/w...trol-on-or-off

Medieval2/Kingdoms and UAC are bitter enemies. Believe me.

    A little bit late here...

I tried installing the patch and running the game with UAC off, still no go.

Are you trying to use the launcher for the Kingdoms campaigns or their icons? Are all the TW icons set to XP Compatible?

After this, I am out of ideas. Maybe time to ask Sega support.

I've tried both the launcher and the individual icons with the same result.

    I'm running Vista, not XP.

Right click the icons, click properties, click Compatibility tab. Are all five icons checked like the picture?

^Yes, but the only thing is I don't have an option for XP Service Pack 3, only SP2.

But, anyhow, I seem to have figured out the problem. Since the US patch was causing it to not work and giving me this "wrong disc" error, I winged it and decided to try the UK and EU patches. I DLed the UK Gold patch first, installed it, and now everything starts up without even a hiccup.

So despite buying it in North America from a North America-based retailer, I apparently somehow ended up with the UK version of the game.

Well, I kinda forgot about Canada... But the retailer I got it from was based in southern California, though.

But, oh well. That's all semantics now. It's working and I've got a whole new bunch of mods open to me now. Appreciate the assistance. Thanks.

Good one to remember. You may have got it because of your Canadian address. Thank you for sharing.

Just an anecdotal story here. I bought an old game for my son that was long out of distribution through Amazon. When it got here it turned out to be a UK copy. So I had to use the UK patches for it. And I live in California too. When you get physical game discs for old games check to see what localization version they are. It can take some time hunting for that info though. Good luck!

I clicked the link www.securom.com, when the box comes up for kingdoms, it took me to the site, closed the site and now vanilla works, now I will reinstall SS 6.3, hopefully. Thanks for the the advice . I had the exact problem on my XP, have not played in a month came back to play and the kingdoms.exe error hit.
