Roman Garrisons

In the early games what kind of garrisons are good in roman cities? I allways seem to run into a problems with the free people and tribes and there full stacks of troops sieging a town with only a few units in them.

Any help will be greatly appreciated ^_^.

hastati & velites are acceptable, cheap garrison units.
you've got two types of units that can concentrate javelin fire into the narrow areas of a city like streets or gates. don't expect hastati to last long against elite units though. you can also tell the hastati to enter guard mode if cavalry threatens them.
this is if you want some combat prowess for your garrison. if all you need is public order, then obviously light roman infantry will suffice.
