Read some of the things stickied at the top, there is some good advice in those.

The best way to start any battle is to make a box of sorts. The online community has a name for it, but I forget. Starts with N. Basically, you can't go wrong with a box. Also, use a well known name, like Caesar or Alexander, to strike fear into the hearts of your oponent before they've even seen your army. With a battle of wills you need to take the initative! Everyone respects people with names like these. Finally, use elephants and artillery. A very, very small minority don't allow it, but you'll likely never encounter them anyway. And always upgrade with chevrons. They're slightly cheaper and therefore better in all ways.

This player is being sarcastic. if you do the opposite of everything he said you should be fine.

A few tips i can give you are:
    1. Find a clan that can teach you all about MP, because there's a lot to learn. there aren't many clans with an organized education system but that's not my concern. Without a bunch of experienced players to mentor you, you may very well end up like Enstantane or one of those people that uploads battles to youtube where they beat Greece or Carthage using Rome or Seleucia. which are arguably a few of the most easy match-ups discounting any major faction vs any minor faction.
    2. ALT attack (holding down ALT while giving an attack order) is crucial for cavalry that have secondary weapons.
    3. memorize the hotkeys, controls and key combination's as soon as you can.

    Another good tip
If you have played the campaign on hard or amazingly on very hard TELL people on multiplayer as they always fear people who can do the campaign on very hard and all the bad players will avoid you

In all honesty don't bother spending too much time learning RTW as RTW 2 MAY be out in a year or so

LOL your joking? Campagning skills are more of a battle map skills and how to manage your army. Plus in multyplayer you dont use hastati and principes as your main infantry line, I would even say that a serious player would not use then at all. Also in campagne the upgrades are not the same, i mean, as far as i know campagne its pretty hard to get gold gold urbans and some gpold gold praetorian cavalry... so when the campagne player will translate from campagne to multiplayer he will use as some beginers do early legionary or even hastati. I would also say that late roman legionaries aren't a good choice online.
