Wow France/gaul is hard to retake as a Roman faction

I'm playing a campagn as the eastern empire, I've retaken parts of the west, and am at with the western empire. So I've taken most of hispana, will be moving into italy soon, I've made a few attemps at taking gaul but was pushed back by the contantinain rebels, lucky they offered a ceasfire. The funny thing is I've the same problem in my byzantine reconqest games in stainless steel. So what is the best way to reclaim gaul?

what?! really, that's like the easiest bit as the Western Empire. Since in the early campaign constantine's only professional army is in Arelate, where you have your best troops, the rest are mainly german federates. Saying that... fighting against a roman faction that has developed infrastructure (I take it they have many big cities now? Perhaps big stacks of comitatenses?)
is very hard, my best advice is to try and get hunnic foederati, though it feels like cheating ( point for team, hunnic cavalry just make the game too easy as the romans, please limit their use somehow! They are at least as good as Alan mercs but cost way less, they should have similar cost, and be mercs!) Or just lots of anti-infantry cavalry, like clibinarii, and smash away their cavalry and then flank 'em!

Thanks for the advice, but I'm playing as the eastern empire, I've just taken Hispana and italy is in the control of the western empire who I am at war with, they seem to resent me for interfering in there zone of control.

you need elites to take on another roman faction, and you WILL suffer heavy casualties

Yup Roman Elites are hard to crack as their morale don't falter even when their battlelines are shatered;Still bombard them with fire arrows and catapults (this will reduce their morale), use your own comitanensis and palatines as anvil and hamer them on flanlks and from rear with anti infantry cavalery like Cataphractes; I beat them with technicly Inferior RB troops but it's indeed costly.
