    Default Siege Tower bug?

I did some searching but found nothing. My units won't enter a siege tower. They'll walk up to the ramp as if they're going to go inside and then suddenly turn around then try again. Anyone know what this problem could be caused by? Could it be due to the fact that I changed the unit spacing so Hoplites won't spread out?

It is a known bug and there are threads on it somewhere. There was one recently (the one about Pergamon I think), Brusilov replied and gave details of the bug.

Yes, it's an annouying bug that is part of RTW. The only good news is that for some reason it does not affect all towers - if I build five or six towers usually two (or more) will work OK. Just hope that it's not these towers that get destroyed on the way to the walls.

I've tired various things to stop this from happening - selecting the units and try to get them to move away. All to no effect.

I'd suggest that with huge and epic walls you always include one or two sap points as well as the usual number of towers and rams.

As ybbon66 has posted it's been discussed before in several places - I am quite sure in the RS threads and maybe also the RTW Eras Tech Help thread.

I wonder if it happened to me also, I guess it did, but maybe once. I use onagers when possible (means: everytime )

If the besieged army has limited missile troops but a full stack of say hoplites, if you knock out the towers, then siege towers, with fire at will enabled are great at smashing a unit on the wall on the way to the wall, even if you then go through a hole in the wall instead. Onagers are not great at getting units on a wall, whereas towers fire down onto them.

2 units of onagers can easily make 3-4 holes in the wall, destroy nearby towers, force units to get out of the wall, unless they don't want to be burried under the rubble and if there's any ammo left, onagers can inflict some casualties to enemies by firing through the holes. Many holes mean many points of entry, thus stretching the defences making it easier to brake. And having onagers provides the option of immediate assault (without waiting 1-2 turns to build siege equipment), the enemy can't react with any reinforcements. But that's just me, everyone has his/her own strategies/tactics/habits I rather use the battering ram in the early stages of game and siege towers really occasionally.

Oh I agree, Onagers are essential to taking larger walls. As much as anything it depends on the defence, if they have a few units I will try to take the town as quick as possible - so onagers are by far the quickest way of breaking in. If there is a full stack in defence, then I try multiple ways in, onagers, sap points, rams and siege towers. The only ones I hate are loads of missile troops defending, in which case it's going to be bloody no matter what (well in my experience anyway). Just don't forget to put siege towers on fire at will, they really can be quite a weapon and can clear most of a unit off a wall.
