Default Battle timer yes or no?

I started a new campaign with Macedonians. Betrayed by the Greeks, I lay siege to Athens and started to build a siege tower. The Greeks sally out but didn't manage to kill me nor did I kill them in the given 45 minutes. I believed if I manage to outlast them since they attacked me, the victory would automaticall be mine. But the timer ran its course and started to go into negative numbers! I finally re-equiped my siege tower which was luckily already built and gained entry into the city.

Shouldn't the battle be over once the time is out? I know I set Unlimited time to off before starting this campaign.

That sounds like a bug to me, but I guess I'm not sure. All I know is that the timer has worked fine for me, although in situations where I outlast something like a sally, rather than end in my victory it ends in a draw.
Quoted from a user on another forum:
"If I werent playing games Id be killing small anamils at a higher rate than I am now"

Oh. Well then, lucky me that I had that siege tower built.

After a month of playing RTW there are still some things I am doing for the first time. I've never defended a city against a siege until XGM, for example.
