Today I have watched this (I know, it is Axis Powers Hetalia and it is quite gay), which brings out my interest that why Mollet actually proposed a Franco-British Union?? What advantage France would win from an Union??

I have wondered this myself, and Churchill proposed this when he was in Paris before the French Government decided to seek an armistice. They asked Churchill if the British would release them from the commitment to not seek a seperate peace, which Churchill told them that they would not, but if they sought one, Britain would not blame them. He then proposed the aforementioned Franco-British Union. I think that since Britain's economy was superior France would have benefited from that, and since France was down and out, it could still fight by having its colonies protected by the British, could secure its expensive warships under British colours and any effort it made to repel the Germans could be sure of British support/equipment. It is my opinion though that it would benefit the UK far more than France, since it that would have assured the French Fleet remained in allied hands, allow the British to utilise the resources of the French Empire, and France would still resist Germany, which would prevent the Germans from concentrating on the British.

We are talking different "Union".
What I want to discuss is 1956 union plan, which was proposed by French; the Churchill's union plan, unfortunately, was only his imagination. French government had not even discussed that (or mentioned) in their last meeting.
Still, I don't understand why Mollet had to propose that just for Suez Crisis; did France face some economical or social problems that its own government could not solve??
