    Default Templar militias

    Is it me or do the Templars only have crossbow and merchant cavalry militias, the only units that can have free upkeep in towns/cities?

    In the online unit database, most units have the free_upkeep_unit flag but only the above two have actually free upkeep. I also see that motte/castle/fortresses/citadels have free_upkeep bonus but I never manage to get units in there for free.

    What am I missing?

    Any City/Castle you wish to garrison the unit in has to be able to recruit that unit first before it allows free upkeep for it.

    What submods are you using? In the latest RR, all professionel units don't have free upkeep. Only militias in towns, and Feudal/Religious units in castles. And seeing as most of the templar units are professionel / mercenaries, that would explain your issue.

    Kaidonni: I get that.

    PerXX: I have the RR that is bundled with SS 6.1.

    So your point is that in towns I'm stuck with crossbow and merchant cavalry at most, since towns only give you templar spearmen, an early professional, if I recall properly (anyway, it's certainly not a militia).

    In castles, as you suggest, I would expect that religious units (such as templar squires) would have free upkeep. Well, they don't.

    As I said, the only free upkeep units i have seen in any situation (towns or castles) are x-bow mil and merch cav mil and only in towns/cities.

    Can someone please point me towards which files to tweak so that I can set it up like it was originally intended? Maybe add templar squires to towns, so that towns get a decent garrison. Much appreciated.

    Making a unit a free upkeep unit is luckily fairly easy.

    find your export_descr_unit.txt, and search for your unit of choice.

    For instance, the Templar Squires:

    Under the attributes line, simply add "free_upkeep_unit". Remember to seperate each attribute by a comma. Again, with the Templar Squires, edit it to look like this:

    and to the line with "attributes" add this:

    So I can conclude that the online unit database was generated from a set of files which have the free_upkeep_unit set to all units, not only to those originally intended by the mod creators.
