Default Small town in Australia first in the world to ban bottled water.

THE very last bottle of still water has been run out of Bundanoon in the New South Wales Southern Highlands, as the sleepy hamlet officially became the world's first town to boycott bottled H2O.

To shed some light on the topic of bottled water here is a calculation by Pablo Päster done 2 years ago. The calculation regards Fiji waters exports to USA. The accuracy of it is probably correct, mathematicly, but may be off due to routes taken and bottle production location. Though divide the result in half and its still very high.

The total amount of water used to produce and deliver one bottle of imported water is 6.74kg (5kg + 20g + 1kg + 720g)! And the amount of GHGs released amount to 250g (93g + 4.3g + 153g), or 0.25kg, or 0.00025 tons.

Should the countries with clean tap water follow in Bandanoons footsteps or is bottled water needed?

No it shouldn't be banned. I never drink bottled water, only tap water.
    Banning isn't the solution.

Goodness, I didn't think Bundanoon would ever be in the news. I go down there about once a year to stay with family friends. I'm sure it will affect my holiday greatly.

Authoritarianism FTW. I think they just want people to drink the polluted tap water.

Ah yes, that terrible polluted tap water that happens to contain fluoride. It really is just a symbol of authoritarianism banning a product that shouldn't have to cost you any money in the first place, beyond the miniscule fee that is paid in water costs every year.

Actually quite the opposite. It was probably a blow against a proposal to shop water up to Sydney from there when the dams were at their lowest a couple of years ago.

The water there is sweet actually and there are many natural sources in adjoining state forests and national parks. Water falls and the like.

Tap water can be clean. In Finland it's cleaner than most bottled water.

Really? The water here contains like female hormones that arent filtered when women pee while taking birth control.

Yeah, I think Scandinavia is one of the very few (or the only) place in the world where tap water is actually of good quality. You can drink it, no problem. That's what my teacher said at least.

The water in toilets are of the same quality if you didn't know ^^ Though the toilet sorta adds an unwanted taste to it, goes to show how cheap water is.

Well atleast Fin, Swe, Den, Nor, IL(?), Netherlands, Germany, Italy, France... Well long list I don't know half of it.

Should send the bottles to Africa where there is actually some1 who'd appriciate it.

And Justice, since ur country doesn't provide proper tap water its obvious you will buy bottled water.

    Our tap is fine.
The powers delegated by the proposed Constitution to the federal government are few and defined. Those which are to remain in the State governments are numerous and indefinite. The former will be exercised principally on external objects, as war, peace, negotiation, and foreign commerce; with which last the power of taxation will, for the most part, be connected. The powers reserved to the several States will extend to all the objects which, in the ordinary course of affairs, concern the lives, liberties, and properties of the people, and the internal order, improvement, and prosperity of the State. - James Madison

Typical. That would be right, Bundanoon of all places. TBF there is practically no shops there, just a few cafes and takeaways and a pub from memory. And there is loads of natural water sources there.

Would it not be in the intrest of countriest without drinking water taps to either, fix it, or ensure the bottled water gets as localy produced as possible, instead of importing water from Fiji. Why it has become a trend to buy imported water I cannot understand :S In Sweden the bottled water consumption increases, eventhough we have perfectly drinkable tap water in every home at a very low cost. Why buy something you already payed for?

Or better still, just buy a water filter if you are that worried by it...

Personally I prefer the taste of water without additives etc., and though I know it helps teeth, I am unsure about the long term consequences of it.

The long term consequences are that your teeth won't fall out.

Tap water is 90% of the time far healthier than bottled water. But we get the image in our minds that bottled water is safer just because it has a label that says Distilled or Purified. In reality most public water systems have higher standards than private water distributors.

This isn't to say I'd support a ban of bottled water. I'm not a communist.

But I'd much rather just buy a water purifier to put on my sink and save maybe a thousand dollars per year on buying water jugs or bottles.

This is certainly true in Amsterdam.
A few years ago they did a test with all major brands of bottles water plus tap water, and the tap water was BY FAR the least polluted of all. - and still some people buy bottled water

But of course this isn't true everywhere.
When I was in California (orange country), I drank bottled water because the tap water tasted horrible.
And in Russia, I didn't even have to taste the tap water: it was brown.

There is a company like that in Utrecht, called "Bar-le-Duc"

They literally have two pipes going down the same well: one goes to the bottling plant and the other supplies the city water supply.

In Rotterdam it's apparently quite bad though, a friend of my father once came to visit our home and he was very, but then very surprised about how clean the tap water here is. He even took about 3 liter of it in empty bottles with him.

In Rotterdam it's just as good, unless the guy has a rusty pipeline in his house. Although there are certain places around the country where the tap water is even more pure and tasteful (areas with coastal dunes, Flevoland), the tap water in the Netherlands is top quality.
