Default [Discov] Rune Stone Found In Norway

A workman operating a digger has found what may be a completely unknown rune stone on a farm in Mandal, Norway. The stone is 1.3 m wide, 1.3 m tall, and weighs approximately half a ton. It was found under some eighty year old oak trees, and it is speculated that it is covering a grave. Sixty to seventy rune markings can be seen on the stone, which the county conservator (who is not an expert on runes, but an archaeologist) very tentatively dates to the 5th or 6th centuries.

"A rock has been found with many rune-like signs. It will be examined in the next few days. I am optimistic that this may be a genuine rune stone, but it will have to be examined by a runologist," said county conservator Frans-Arne Stylegar. He also said that he was "confident that it is not a modern forgery". The stone will now be examined by experts, and they will try to determine whether or not it is on top of a grave.

A couple of experts have now been to examine the stone, including the world's only professor in runology, and it is certain that it is genuine. There are 63 rune markings on the rock, which is unique as only one other stone in Norway has been found with more. Only three words have been deciphered so far; "Jeg, Nødgjest" (it would translate as "I, Need-guest" - the name is not known from any other sources), and the word "stone", which has been misspelled. The last word lead them to believe that it may be a grave marker. They currently estimate the date for when the runes were carved to between the 4th and 6th Centuries.
