I am playing RTR platinum edition. I know that you can change it to allow you to recruit generals like in the vanilla version. If anyone could tell me in detail how to do it that would be fantastic! Thanks

Units (except mercenaries) are recruited through buildings. Different buildings give access to different units.
The file you want is called export_descr_buildings.txt (EDB) and is located in your RTW/RTRPE/Data folder
you will need a text editor file such as notepad or notepad++
open the file with the editor
some of the buildings will contain lines similar to the one below:-
recruit "aor greek toxotai" 0 requires factions { epirus, }
you will need to replace the section in blue with the units name and the green section with the name of the faction you want to have access to that unit.
Unit names can be found in export_descr_units.txt - also in your data folder

Thank you for the reply but I am a computer idiot so I need more detail. In the vanilla version the general unit was trained in the Circus Maximus which is not available in RTR.
When I try this I get a script error when I start the game
You can put the unit text under any building that you can recruit from, it doesn't need to be a Circus Maximus. Heck, you could put the relevant text under the Practice Range and recruit Generals from there if you wanted!
Whatcha' wearing?

what? you can recruit generals in vanilla? im pretty sure u can only do that in bi. if u mean recuit elite cavalry like the ones in your generals bodyguard, then pretty much all factions can do that with the exception of rome, but equites are pretty much "light praetoria." The gauls have noble cav, parthians, have catas... almost all factions have "general's" cav they can recruit with a top-level barracks, these elite cav essentially being "genera's bodyguards" without the extra hitpoint.
Of these facts there cannot be any shadow of doubt: for instance, that civil society was renovated in every part by Christian institutions; that in the strength of that renewal the human race was lifted up to better things-nay, that it was brought back from death to life, and to so excellent a life that nothing more perfect had been known before, or will come to be known in the ages that have yet to be. - Pope Leo XIII
You have the right Legio_Italica. The recruit of generals can be done only in BI.
I know. I am playing RTRBI and need to know how to get the generals back. Thank you for any help you can provide
I recommend either doing what Clearchus of Sparta just suggested or downloading my mod.

You'll have to give us more specifics. What, precisely, are you trying, and what is the error you're getting?
