Default "Lord, Save US From Your Followers"

I saw a preview for this a few hours ago, someone had posted it on facebook. I looked at the title and immediately expected it to be another opinionated documentary with a thinly veiled anti-Christian agenda. I was surprised to learn that it was made by a Christian. The whole movie, he goes around and listens to other people's stories and compiles them into a film.

    Here are a few clips:

After watching one of the video clips (the first I think), I couldn't help but feel moved.

That looks very interesting. For a moment, I was ready to point out that someone who calls for the Lord's help is a follower of the Lord, so asking Him to save the caller from His followers would be rather odd. This must be seen by everyone on planet Earth!

There are children who don't believe in Santa Clause but still write him a letter at christmas time demanding toys. This would have been no different.

    I find that analogy insulting.

Well maybe you should think on it a bit more.

No, I refuse to think on it any more. Santa is a jolly old fat man who wears red cloth and cotton. God is infinity and eternity defined. I don't really see how they add up.

    "Racist, Sexist, Anti-Gay
    Christians, Fascist, GO AWAY!"

I love that part on the 3rd video.

    Yeah, quite catchy.

Funny thing was that when I was that age, when they did Battlecry, I remember really wanting to go. When I saw excerpts from it here, I was thinking, "wow, if taken out of context, this could look really, really, really bad."

I had kind of wanted to open this up as a venue to discuss a few things, like how people perceive Christians and why. It seems like on these forums, a lot of people have a lot of passion in denouncing Christianity and other religions, and I thought it might be a good idea to make a thread for this that isn't about how atheists/christians/muslims/flying spaghetti monsters are retarded for once.

I guess I can start. I was raised Christian, and went to a Pentecostal church. Seen a whole bunch of crazy stuff, from religious fanaticism, to hypocritical christians, to free charity and love and compassion. I remember thinking at a young age that it would be really cool to go on a cross-country trip to start up churches across the US--somewhat naively believing that they weren't there already. I remember that it really impressed one of my pastors because I had really wanted to go for it. He said that it would probably be better to just try and get the churches and christians throughout the world to work together. I remember thinking that that was pretty weird. Now, 6 or 7 years later, I can't help but agree. I see Christians vehemently denouncing homosexuality and abortion as capital sins against god--them being mentioned only briefly in the old testament among other things--but these same people, many of them at least, never tithe, more than a few don't give to charity, very few listen to other people, and very few accept other opinions, even on trivial matters like politics.

Seems sort of like an embarrassment to the religion. :/

Everyone is a hipocrit, everyone. The Bible even clearly acknowledges it and says we are all hipocrits and that is why we should not be judgemental in the first place.

Well, cfmonkey45, I tend to agree that the Christian religion has become perverted by intense hatred. I must disagree on the issue of abortion, but that is for another time. Catholics, at least, have said that Homosexuality in-of-itself is not a sin, but to practice the acts associated with it is the sin. As you are a Penetcostal, I assume that you would not understand my explanation of Homosexuality by way of Purgatory, but I don't believe it is as great a sin as has been shouted. Abortion, however, needs to be equated on par with the most heinous murder, in my opinion.

I find your remembrance of wanting to build churches across America very adorable and beautiful in of itself. If only the nostalgic and childish (in the best sense) ruled over Christian thought in the 21st century, we'd probably be better off. People like Bill O'Reilly say they are Catholics, but constantly interrupt, scream, yell, and carry on like babies. Worse still, we have monsters like Jeremiah Wright, Jr., and Frederick Phelps, Sr. calling for God to damn their own country. Behavior of that sort is more like that of the pagan yak-hair worshipers than Thomas of Aquinas or C.S. Lewis.
