Well basically, the Barbary Pirates were then what the Somalian Pirates are today. A big nuisance to trade and really really poor (thus why they pirated). Since they were so poor, they didn't have giant battleships to totally knock out professional navies, they were poor pirates who could barely afford the little ships you usually meet.

    That is why.

Well, if that was accurate, I doubt they would have been able to organize raids into coastal villages of France, Spain and Portugal (and even Iceland) to grab the population as slaves for sale in North African markets. Quite a few of Moroccan fortifications of the time were built by Christian slaves. The numbers of the European slaves involved were quite significant too. For example, supposedly there were 10's of thousands of Christian slaves engaged in construction of the fortifications in Fez. The rulers (the "brain" behind Berber piracy) of Algerian and Tunisian cities were not some pushovers either. It took some "doing" on the part of major European (and American) powers to subdue these pirates and the subduing did not come until the middle of the XIX century.

    Hi all.
The "rulers" of the berber states Algeria and Tunis, was in effect the Califf in Cairo. Hence the reason for Barbary States to be a protectorate of the Ottomans. They also, to some degree, financed the berbes, and in return they wanted the berbes to bring them a part of the slaves taken (I do not know in percentage how many). They were also far more dangerous than they are made actually. Their navy was not that strong, but it was superbly led, which led to a couple of victories against the USA and Denmark, before both of these contries decided to end the plage once and for all. While USA fought mostly in the two wars or paid tributes for peace, Denmark sent three frigates and some smaller ships on long time patrol duties, to make sure danish trade was not hindered any more. The danes had to with draw in 1803 due to Napoleon, but the USA continued until 1805, with the battle of Tripoli ending the wars.

The pirate and slavery problem was also largely ignored by the major powers because each felt it caused more damage to their opposition to themselves, leading to a relativly weak power being a constant threat to Europe's shpping.

You'd have learn how to use the DB editor and other tools. And check and mod the various permission tables that allow factions to use various units. You might have to mod regional income in the Barbary, so more expensive ships are affordable.

This is a question for the experienced modders in the mod threads.

Portugal sent a 20k strong army to Morocco in the 16th century. About a hundred men made it back. Portugal ceded Tangiers to Britain in the 17th. After 20 years Britain got out. I imagine the Port's were having a good laugh behind closed doors.

France conquered Algeria in 1830. Reputedly having to wipe out 1/3 of the population to pacify the place. And even that didn't work in the long run.

Spain created a world class Empire and couldn't handle this bunch on their doorstep.

In the game they are just too easy to conquer. It's one of my biggest disappointments. At least there should be always reoccurring rebellions with artillery.

The Xebec was one of histories out standing war vessels.

Well I'd start by looking through the modding sections and posting a request there.

You'd have to do your own modications. You could start by getting familiar with DB editing. Which has really excellent step by step guide.

However this just alters units and unit permissions. Changing the set up of the barbary states, would require the use of the starting position editor, which I know little about. Here is the guide to using that.

Realize of course the game is very large. CA has promised to release a modding system of their own, but nothing so far. A dedicated game modding system would make things much more simple.
