Icon3 Kataphract Mumakil / Mumakil Innovation

    Hi guys,

Yes, another one of my threads....

I am keen on finding out what most of you think on the idea of having a Kataphract (Heavy) Mumakil unit.

I propose having the Kataphract Mumakil as expensive, prolonged training and rare unit. The idea is to give a bit of variety to the Harad roster in Mumakil types, and giving Harad a bit of glamour like Rhuns Loke units and kataphract cavalry.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

The idea isn't that historically innacurate because in our history there were Cataphract Elephants.

Can you imagine how awesome a Mumak clad in golden armour would be!?

Please vote on the poll and expand disscusion within the thread.

    Evan

There is no support for that in the lore. They were large elephants with castles on their backs. If they would have been armoured JRR would have said that.

Lore can't prove anything here apart from big creature and tower, so we use our imaginations...

yes but we still have to remember that Arda had practicly the same laws of nature as we have. The Mumakill would already be a very 'weak' creature because the bigger you get the more stress there is on your bones and muscles. The strenght of those do not go up to par with the weight you get. Putting on extra armour would give the following:

Basically, the armor that would be required to protect a 50ft tall 30+ft long super elephant would weigh so much that it could not even get up, to say nothing of how you would get it on it anyway.

And what should it be made of, and where would they get the stuff.
Oh and not to mention the armour would break under it's own weight.

Well the current mumakil don't look that weak. Tolkein's world is fantastical there are many things that don't apply to our lawsa of nature. If men can build Minas Tirith, they can put armour on a mumak.

It shouldn't necesarily move at speed, but in combat would obliterate regiment by the weight that its swinging tusks would have on them if it got close enough.

You know that, to support it's own weight as you'd haveto hang the armour from th Mumak's back, you'd had to make it at least a feet thick? This would again also be determined by the type of armour. Wood would be thicker then Steel for example. I think they would use bamboo as that would be the most common resource to them.

Hell, a giant cloth blanket would probably provide arrow protection on the scale we're talking about...

There are more important things then making Armored Mumakil. Either way it would probly make them that more powerfull.
The AI is like a retarded overwieght child. He realy want all those fries, he just does not know how to get them. http://img1.coolspacetricks.com/imag...unny/81776.gif

No it would not because when about 1000 arrows hit it (which is not oncommon for a unit of that size) the cloth would became punctured to such a degree it would start to tear under his own weight. (I know again with the weight but it's just very important on a lrger scale)

But it's fantasy, so we can forgive a few things such as armour being heavy. The last thing we need is an aerodynamics engineer telling us why a dragon couldn't possibly fly, or that Shadowfax shouldn't be able to speak english. Fan-ta-sy, people. Suspend your disbelief. Personally, I think the think Evan's idea would be a good submod unit. Interesting idea to say the least.

Well, I wasn't being totally serious just sort of an example for the scale of this thing.

Tolkien said Arda was probably this world but we are a few era's later.

Are you suggesting LOTR isn't fantasy?
