I can see it now: Bosmer sappers who set cliff-racers on fire, then release them at the approaching charge of Land Drughs, while the Fighters' Guild units pin the Blackwood Company while the Dark Brotherhood rushes for a flank. All the while, the Mages' Guild apprentices sit on the walls and set the siege equipment on fire.

You picked wrong game for that. I would go with mount and blade. The fact that you can have big army of NPCs makes it more suitable for Total War style.

Oblivion has a way better story and mind bottling depth and realism.
It`s so way better than any other Rpg you can think of ...

The thing with TES4: Oblivion is that it's the single greatest modding platform ever devised. There are literally terrabytes (note the plural) of quality mods available for the game. My own installation uses 150+ individual mods (some small, some huge), and I've only scratched the surface of what's out there.

If the vanilla game doesn't do it for you, change it. There'll be a mod (or more likely, several) that'll fix anything you're unhappy with.

What if you are a general in Oblivion and you DO have an army at your disposal ?
Now doesn`t that sound just grand !? You! riding through the ranks and shouting orders and encouraging your men from face to face. And owning your own castle and seeing ppl working at ground level, up and close. See your kingdom built brick by brick.

To be more specific, you want a Grand Theft Auto, in a medieval town ?

Oblivion total war would be totally awesome. Especially if you would at the Shivering Isles. Make every city a faction, every village-town (Hackdirt, Water's Edge) a city/castle. You could add several special units for each faction. (Like giving Chorrol the fighter's guild champions (There is their headquarters) and let Cheydinhal have the Dark Brotherhood Battlefield assassin's, and Skingrad could even have vampires) I would totally love playing as Anvil or Skingrad or something. And maybe you could add random/historical events like an attack from Skyrim or Morrowind, and who knows, maybe you could add the Morrowind map as well (Elder scrolls 3:Morrowind)

That would be ing awesome !!
