I was watching the LoTR movies last night, especially the end where Frodo and Sam are rescued by Gandalf on the wings of giant eagles.

Then it dawned upon me, all the great adventure was never necessary. The fellowship of the Ring going through mountains, mines, marshes. All the suffering. Gandalf's fall. Boromir's death. Gollum. Shelob. Etc.

Frodo could have been inserted directly at the doorway of Mount Doom by an eagle!

The major problem is that Frodo let's the Ring go! He would never do that! He would be all like "you know, I think this whole idea is stupid!"
Maybe Gandalf and the others would've ordered the Eagle to let Frodo go, but still...

Well it is not the first time I get slapped here for posting something that has been discussed loooooong ago. Fact is, I'm a relative newcomer to TATW, a few weeks at most, and I don't have time to read all the stuff way back to the beginning. Or if a thread is several hundred pages long, I read only the first page and the last few.

But this idea occurred to me without first seeing it elsewhere (smug, little pat on the back) BTW the video is great, it is exactly what I thought. A little slip of the great master Tolkien. It happens all the time in novels, movies, TV, real life, etc.

An eagle wouldn't even be able to fly over Mount Doom since there would be hot and poisonous fumes rising from the vent. Also consider that there would be less visibility at high altitudes because of the massive black clouds that hover over Mordor, they wouldn't see where they were going or dropping the ring.

In the movie the Eagles fly at a relativley low altitude whilst going to pick up Frodo and Sam. And Sauron probably did have regular patrols all along Mordor, but remember at that all the Orcs where called to fight at the Black Gates at that time.

In conclusion it sounds easier than it is.

If they don't drop it themselves, the eagle will drop them with it.

But I remember when me and some friends were having a LotR party(watched all three!!) and at the end, when we were quite sick of hobbits and rings, one of us made that very same point..."Wait, why couldn't they have just flown the eagle ALL THE WAY THERE??" There was a big discussion on this a while ago.
Simply put

If they flew on Eagles the Nazgul would see them and take them down. If they defeated them nazgul then the eye would see them and shoot them down with thousands of orc archers.

In lore there is no eye but the Nazgul would report to Sauron and the eagles would be shot down again. Though I dont see a reason they could not fly closer to Mount Doom through the the north or something.

With Mordor's armies inside Mordor the eagles would never have had a chance of flying to Mount Doom without being killed. It was only possible because Sauron's army was already shattered when they would fly into Mordor.
