    Icon5 Edit EDU and game won't load

    I can't edit the export_descr_unit and get the game to load.I've deleted the two nec files but it still wont work. I'm sure there is an asnwer on here but i feel quite defeated at the moment.Spent 2 hours going "why can't i find the unpacking files?>?" then realised they were hidden in the virtuastore... grrrr vista.

    Any help would be fantastic. Really wanna increase the troops 4x to have some epic battles. Darth Mod on empire has inspired this!!
    This is my first attempt of any kind of modding so i really am a N00B.
    Also first post on the boards,although i have been finding gems on the site for a couple of years now!!

    Ne who, notthat it should matter with this but my rig is:

    Q6600
    Geforce 9500gt
    4gb ram
    Vista (grrr)
    2 Hands
    Too much coffee.

    Some silly questions first, so we know where we stand:

    1. Are you using a) the base game (vanilla) b) one of the kingdom campaigns c) a downloaded mod?
    2. If 1a) or 1b), how are you implementing the 'filefirst' method?
    3.
    I've deleted the two nec files
    Does this refer to the two geography files after unpacking?
    4. Are you aware that you can change unit size in the option screens?
    -- This one is a bit more specific ---
    5. Are you aware that the maximum unit size in the EDU is 100?

    Thank you very much for your reply. After a bit of sleep i'm up again to finish this off... hehe

    1. I'm running plain old vanilla with all 3 updates. No mod yet but i have broken crecent 2.0 waiting to be used.

    2.I created (i think) a batch file in notepad with literally 'medieval2.exe --io.file_first' as it's command. It loads the game fine w/o any kind of modifying.

    3. Sorry i should've been more clear,yes -the two geog files.

    4. I do realise it is possible to change unit sizes in game but i want to double or triple those sizes to have big battles.

    5. By this do you mean it is not possible to have peasants set to a standard number of 120 in the exp..desc..
    -ii) this is still a problem even if so because any kind of edit in the file stops med2 from running. There is no crash per se, jut a load up attempt- doesnt quite reach the initial page of the first thing you see on the med2 startup, and then turns off the game w/o an error or ne thing....

    Please give an example of what you have done. Copy the section of the EDU here for inspection.

    A crash like that usually gives an error message in the log. The little message window that pops up is always the same. The log file is in the root of m2tw. Open with notepad and search for lines with [error] in it. The line below that gives details.

    Sorry about taking so long to reply, had a very busy day it turned out in the end.


    Development has occurred however. It looks like the tool i'm using (Brandon M's quick and dirt unit size modifier) does not work for what ever reason. Wheni manually edit the EDU it's fine. Changes andloads up. When i use the tool,even by adding 1 to each unit,it crashes.

    So either some units cannot be added to or it causes a crash, orthetool changes another aspect inthe EDU that causes it to crash.

    Any idea?

    Right,got it figured. It was the EDU maximum unit size. It's not 100,its 60...
    Ahhh well- no way tochange this, is there?


    If not, there goes my dream of tens of thousands on the battlefield...

    Brandon M's was written for RTW if I remember correctly. Since then a few lines have been added\removed in the EDU.

    The limit for the unit size should be 100, but I can be mistaken. Try one unit at a time of: infantry, cavalry, missile, siege with that number.

    I think you need 40 posts before you can rep someone.

    The limit for soliders in a unit in the EDU is 100 which amounts to a unit size of 250 on 'huge' settings.

    The only tool I know is worth using to edit the EDU is notepad++. Normal notepad works fine of course but notepad++ offers nice extra stuff.

    Are you sure it's 100, if so then somethings broken.I can reach 60, beyond that then it crashes the game on start up.

    It doesn't work in medieval2, but kingdoms should be able to make it.
    Tip about the log: compress it and attach, there is a limit on the length of text that you add to a post.
