    Default Pergamum Campaign: Update 13 has arrived! (Feeling Lucky?)

    I'm going through a Pergamum campaign. At periodic points, there will be updates. More importantly, every now and then, the council of Pergamum (you) will vote on various motions of importance to the welfare of the city-state. Or is it city-empire?

    This post will contain links to the update and council session posts. Generally, council session motions and information will be placed at the same time as an update, but on a different post, to allow people to jump straight to it. Voting will be done in topic.

    Please DO discuss etc in here, as an update post may have 300+ pictures, and having more than one on a single page will probably annoy people's computers. Battles are in the "spoiler" segments and can have MANY pictures.

    Generally, the updates are not really in an RP fashion, but the Council sections are, just for fun.

    Default Re: Pergamum: Council is IN Session

    Spoiler for Update 1 is in here!!
    Alright, let's get this party started. As you can see above, it's on H/VH. Hard campaign difficulty because I'm pretty sure the AI gets a 10000 gold/turn bonus on Hard, but nothing on Very Hard. VH battle difficulty - because.

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/1357/perg1002.jpg

    This is our hero of the day, the faction heir of Pergamum. Our dear faction leader starts off 60 years old, so he's liable to die of old age at any point. He'll be resting in a city and governing it. However, the special thing about the city is - you'll see.

    http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/476/perg1003.jpg http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/9719/perg1005.jpg

    Quick start with 8 Militia Hoplite units and a general. I intend to have generals (or Governor-Generals, who are on foot) govern each settlement, and all the Family Members out and conquering or, if there aren't enough armies, sitting somewhere to learn with an academy etc.

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/7250/perg1004.jpg
    http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/2580/perg1006.jpg

    Mining is cool.

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/4117/perg1007.jpg

    I'm only going for one stack. For that I don't need all these units. I don't like peltasts, and the light cavalry aren't much nicer in my eyes. I don't need SIX units of Pergamum hoplites. One minimum, for their command banner, but I'll stick with 3 as optimal (one on each flank, and one in the middle).

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/8020/perg1008.jpg

    I don't like those light infantry, either, compared to militia hoplites, but I'm keeping them for this turn until reinforcements arrive - because the enemy might sally. The three units of phalanx hoplites can help hold a semi-sturdy front line. Archers are archers.

    http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/1756/perg1009.jpg

    This nearby rebel town has a wooden palisade wall. This isn't as nice as a stone wall because I can't use their own towers on them (pity). It isn't until much later that I realize this isn't actually an issue.

    END OF TURN ONE

    http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/2875/perg1011.jpg

    Queue up another general. We'll have need to governors in a bit.

    http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/7094/perg1012.jpg

    And off we go! This will be Attalos' first and only battle. He's going to stay in this town afterwards. Probably, anyway.

    Spoiler for Battle for Mytilene (Assault)

    http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/3930/perg1013.jpg

    Those ladders will go up onto clear points of the wall and men will run to secure a gatehouse. My army will enter the town via that gatehouse while the wall-runners capture towers. The towers/gatehouse can shoot arrows inwards, and this helps incentivise the enemy to not block the gatehouse, letting me get in easily.

    http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/3438/perg1014.jpg

    As you see, the enemy troops are rather close to the right corner ...

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/916/perg1015.jpg

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/332/perg1016.jpg

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/2263/perg1018.jpg

    .. but not on the left. I'll go in through that gatehouse there.

    http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/4826/perg1017.jpg

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/9163/perg1019.jpg

    The troops on the right are a bit of a distraction, but they'll take whatever they can on that side. Getting towers under my control will help. Unfortunately, that tower there is shooting them up a bit. Poor guys, I don't care about them.

    And then when they do get up on the wall, the enemy hoplites spot them and give chase. No breaks, seriously.

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/6795/perg1020.jpg

    http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/6230/perg1021.jpg

    Enemy phalanx hoplites rush to secure the gatehouse I grabbed, however, it's capable of shooting on them.

    http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/1055/perg1022.jpg

    http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/3646/perg1023.jpg

    http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/2403/perg1024.jpg

    The invisible gatehouse archers plink away until the hoplites finally decide to walk away. Finally!

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/8099/perg1025.jpg

    http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/1813/perg1026.jpg

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/6392/perg1027.jpg

    Two units of militia hoplites run in and stand on opposite sides of the T-junction. When that phalanx comes in, whichever side it tries to attack will run away - and their friends will attack into the rear.

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/2491/perg1028.jpg

    And they run away. That unit there came down from off the walls and must've taken its time walking here, to lose that many men. This will be hard if the two units stand on top of one another or do something similar.

    http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/9647/perg1029.jpg

    Hoplites of Pergamum are here! Since they've got a command banner, it might help keep those unsteady militia fighting a little longer. Also, the faction leader is here to give encouragement. With that I march (run) the men forward to take this more forward T-junction and set up another pincer.

    http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/4417/perg1030.jpg

    http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/7674/perg1031.jpg

    A stroke of great luck! The enemy javelin cavalry troops rush straight into the militia, rather than hang back and throw their pointy sticks. This saves me a lot of casualties, and additionally their charge isn't very dangerous, seeing how light they are.

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/213/perg1032.jpg

    http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/2205/perg1033.jpg

    What's left of them run straight through their own phalanx to get away. You can see that unit is moving towards the T-junction. My men have to cross it in order to catch them in a good attack.

    http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/9363/perg1034.jpg

    Wait, what's that in the upper-right corner?
    http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/1807/perg1035.jpg Oh no. Those peltasts managed to get my (expensive-ish) phalanx hoplites. How annoying!

    http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/928/perg1037.jpg

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/7039/perg1038.jpg

    I have the generals' bodyguard finish them off quickly before they can do any more damage.

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/1145/perg1039.jpg

    http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/5215/perg1040.jpg

    http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/7812/perg1041.jpg

    My units couldn't make it in time, so they fell back to the junction near the wall. Hopefully the enemy will fall for it this time.

    http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/5627/perg1042.jpg

    http://img195.imageshack.us/img195/3156/perg1043.jpg

    Sweetness. They routed without having to be nearly all killed. Of course, they were mostly killed, since my militia were packed all around them.

    http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/3133/perg1044.jpg

    http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/7751/perg1045.jpg

    Another unit off from the walls. Here they come ...

    http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/1521/perg1046.jpg

    http://img195.imageshack.us/img195/5558/perg1047.jpg

    No way, what is this? I don't get it, but the unit kind of broke into two parts or something. However, I spot another alleyway behind them that I can get into.

    http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/2815/perg1048.jpg

    http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/5099/perg1049.jpg

    Some random nutcases try to take the junction. Sure, try your best.

    http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/7462/perg1050.jpg

    http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/2410/perg1051.jpg

    They're militia hoplites like my men, but they don't last long when completely surrounded.

    http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/4893/perg1052.jpg

    http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/4867/perg1053.jpg

    http://img198.imageshack.us/img198/247/perg1054.jpg

    Now that unit in the square. One unit light infantry rush forward and turn out of the way as (yet) another unit of hoplites comes out. The enemy turns around, and the men who were waiting at the junction earlier now charge forward. Between the militia at front and back, and those swords at their flank, they're going to die. It's only a matter of causalties on my side.

    http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/4083/perg1057.jpg

    They're lost their spears, and you think it's all over, but no ...

    http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/792/perg1058.jpg

    http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/3151/perg1059.jpg

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/5931/perg1060.jpg

    They take out their spears and move out of the square. The men there attack their backs. Then they turn around and start moving back into the square, and the OTHER men in the street attack their backs.

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/1571/perg1061.jpg

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/9184/perg1062.jpg

    http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/5650/perg1063.jpg

    They die in the end, though, magic sparkles aside. Now to take out the units in the square.

    http://img198.imageshack.us/img198/6987/perg1064.jpg

    http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/8586/perg1065.jpg

    http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/63/perg1066.jpg

    There's still another spare unit left that isn't square-camping. You can tell they came off the walls because they don't have their spears out until they get closer to the square, then their phalanx appears.

    http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/2641/perg1067.jpg

    http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/2879/perg1068.jpg

    http://img198.imageshack.us/img198/4873/perg1069.jpg

    Once they enter the square, they immediately turn to their right, so their back is against the wall. It doesn't really help them much, since their sides are still open.

    http://img195.imageshack.us/img195/214/perg1073.jpg

    http://img198.imageshack.us/img198/2456/perg1074.jpg

    With that, everyone should've been cleared except for the square troops.

    http://img233.imageshack.us/img233/6002/perg1075.jpg

    http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/9944/perg1076.jpg

    http://img195.imageshack.us/img195/3568/perg1077.jpg

    This is harder, because they won't rout. I bring up the cheer squad and get units of hoplites ready to rush the square from several directions in order to ensure someone gets at that phalanx from a good angle. And yep, one guy in the cheer quad got stuck on the enemy phalanx and died. Silly of him.

    http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/9281/perg1078.jpg

    http://img195.imageshack.us/img195/1044/perg1079.jpg

    The moment someone places their foot on the square, the horsemen there attack straight into the spears. The enemy hoplites also lock onto them and start moving forward.

    http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/1632/perg1081.jpg

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/6977/perg1082.jpg

    The hoplites just stop there and let my men eat away at their rear while they watch those heavy cavalry die.

    http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/4607/perg1083.jpg

    All the important people turn up to "secure" the square and help make sure they continue to be paid.

    http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/1491/perg1084.jpg

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/42/perg1085.jpg

    Never any real issues expected, though.

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/8457/perg1086.jpg

    http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/4470/perg1087.jpg

    Good kill ratio.

    http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/7518/perg1088.jpg

    After killing every soldier in the city, I add insult to injury and have half the population shipped off to Pergamum to boost the population there.

    http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/7269/perg1091.jpg

    Hey look, some of the garrison of that town come out - if I attack them, it should draw in the darrison and make for an easier fight that in the streets.

    http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/2443/perg1092.jpg

    However, the assault group can't reach in time. I stop for now, and hire some archers. They're expensive in terms of upkeep (Cretan Archers are 140/turn) but I can't recruit any "Long Range" archers, so I'm willing to pay some barbarians more than even my elite hoplites get.

    http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/4113/perg1093.jpg

    Speaking of archers, Mytilene will be the "archer town". When it eventually gets to the Pantheon of Artemis, archers can get +3 attack there!

    http://img269.imageshack.us/img269/6570/perg1094.jpg
    I end the turn, and then see that those free people went back into their city. How annoying.

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/5438/perg1095.jpg

    I need to replenish the losses from earlier and forgot. I'm going to take more losses from the upcoming battle, as well. Note the Governor-General. It was a mistake, I would normally get the general, who has a heavy cavalry bodyguard. More useful in times of emergency, and they'll still be equally good governors.

    http://img269.imageshack.us/img269/1572/perg1096.jpg

    I prepare the siege. Ladders will do just fine, like before.

    http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/4240/perg1097.jpg

    Spies. If you can get the walls open, it saves a turn of paying upkeep (while sieging) AND you get that settlement's income for one more turn. And it's only 100/turn upkeep - a steal! I'll eventually have a few of these people and they make taking towns (mainly wooden-walled ones) much smoother when you can just show up and walk in.

    http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/8527/perg1098.jpg

    End turn again. Those free people show up. I didn't have any reinforcements, just the troops who took that town earlier. 5 more units of militia hoplites would make things much easier. Still, dealing with phalanx troops is easier in the open, so my archers might get to have a few kills.

    Spoiler for Battle for Nicomedia (Field Battle)

    http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/4656/perg1100.jpg

    I don't have many line troops (militia hoplites) so the three phalanx hoplites are going to have to try and hold by themselves. Usually I like to stick a unit of militia in front of them - that way then the enemy is fighting those, the hoplites behind (with longer spears) get to attack as well. Very deadly.

    http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/6774/perg1101.jpg

    The width between men seems a little wide to me. Enemy infantry can actually walk right up to the front row sometimes - which is why I use some other unit in front (otherwise the front guys pull out swords).

    I don't favor using the 2-deep double stacking, because defense values are high enough that enemies can still get through. These guys will have to buy time for flanking actions.

    http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/1865/perg1103.jpg

    Our archers open fire on the enemy cavalry archers with fire arrows. I don't want to use up all my arrows before the main force arrives.

    http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/3061/perg1104.jpg

    http://img42.imageshack.us/img42/1839/perg1105.jpg

    Taunting barbarians and stoic hoplites. FIGHT!

    http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/2002/perg1106.jpg

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/4185/perg1107.jpg

    Flanking troops move forward as soon as I'm sure thoe infantry will hit the front lines.

    http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/8249/perg1108.jpg

    A unit of barbarians that I didn't see tries to flank, but the right-side flankers catch them. However, it's bad because that unit in the left side will eventually wrap around the end of the phalanx line and start to break it.

    http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/1467/perg1109.jpg

    http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/8196/perg1110.jpg

    General's bodyguard to the rescue! Luckily those horsemen didn't actually run into those spears. Sometimes I think you can take losses from your own spear troops. One thing I do sometimes if turn off phalanx just before the horsemen hit, to be sure. I forgot this time.

    http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/7264/perg1113.jpg

    http://img232.imageshack.us/img232/8851/perg1114.jpg

    http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/9081/perg1115.jpg

    http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/8999/perg1116.jpg

    The reinforcements arrive, and promptly go for the right edge of the spear line. The cavalry are pretty smart to not charge right into the spears - though it might break the line.

    http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/7433/perg1117.jpg

    On the right side, I catch the unit of hoplites that you saw in the picture before this.

    http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/489/perg1118.jpg

    Left side isn't looking to good. Those flanking hoplites and (phalanx and militia) are going to be hard to deal with. And that phalanx going straight for my line will break it for sure, though it hopefully will take a while.

    http://img42.imageshack.us/img42/3632/perg1120.jpg

    On the right side, the militia can't take out the hoplites without some help.

    http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/5334/perg1121.jpg

    Together, they break one unit of hoplites.

    http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/5755/perg1123.jpg

    On the left side, I try to break the enemy phalanx before my own breaks. But with those militia in the way, the charge doesn't do much.

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/6629/perg1124.jpg

    The barbarian archers fire their last few arrows. This isn't going well, nearly all the militia are gone. If I had those extra units that would've made a full stack it wouldn't be a problem.

    http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/1104/perg1126.jpg

    Another failed charge. I didn't lose too many horsemen, but they were pretty ineffective for some reason.

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/2652/perg1127.jpg

    http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/3621/perg1128.jpg

    Hey, you!

    http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/9039/perg1129.jpg

    All the fancy Pergamum hoplites are really fighting now. Two units are down to about half health. The third, if you're wondering, were in the middle of the line, guarding the archers. Speaking of which ...

    http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/5149/perg1130.jpg

    Yeah, the sword hoplites are still alive. Because no one got around to flanking them.

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/804/perg1131.jpg

    It's not nice to watch these expensive hoplites die. But they prevail, none the less.

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/7983/perg1132.jpg

    http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/5557/perg1133.jpg

    Not a bad kill ratio. Still annoyed at losing those good hoplites.

    http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/7153/perg1134.jpg

    Slaves, more slaves! Off to Purgamum with you!

    http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/4177/perg1138.jpg

    http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/4416/perg1136.jpg

    http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/5577/perg1137.jpg

    Everyone runs back, I'm going to take the coastal settlements and ignore the rebels. Archers get some training at the new shrine to Artemis.

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/2325/perg1139.jpg

    This is the rebel stack, and ...

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/7488/perg1140.jpg

    Egypt's defenses. Some light cavalry, peltasts and just pikemen.

    http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/6130/perg1141.jpg

    Great, I can just walk in now.

    http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/4866/perg1142.jpg

    ... I'll get those Cretans later on.

    http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/9084/perg1143.jpg

    Time to start biting Egypt.

    Spoiler for Battle for Halicarnassus (Assault)

    http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/5959/perg1145.jpg

    Of course the enemy pikemen thoughtfully block the open gates with their long weapons.

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/2018/perg1147.jpg

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/7466/perg1150.jpg

    Well, with such a tight formation and small shields, it's easy to guess what'll happen if they got shot in the FACE point blank. Get away from those gates!

    I wasn't expecting this. It seems to happen every now and then. The formation is mostly toast like that, all spread out.

    http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/7131/perg1151.jpg

    Lot of pikemen -> lots of bodies. Poor saps.

    http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/7746/perg1153.jpg

    http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/852/perg1154.jpg

    Everyone goes into the city. Let's finish this off.

    http://img269.imageshack.us/img269/2515/perg1156.jpg

    At one of the other gates, some archers move around to shoot through the gate.

    http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/4796/perg1157.jpg

    http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/3735/perg1158.jpg

    Ouch!

    http://img269.imageshack.us/img269/508/perg1159.jpg

    http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/9599/perg1160.jpg

    http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/1903/perg1161.jpg

    http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/1763/perg1163.jpg

    The first group in runs into the enemy peltasts. Notice how they lost about 40 men to the javelins.

    http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/5850/perg1165.jpg

    Way too familar by now. The pikemen fall for the bait.

    They ran ALL THE WAY out of the square. That's never happened to me before.

    http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/1395/perg1170.jpg

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/1889/perg1171.jpg

    http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/8783/perg1172.jpg

    Rather than let the timer run down, I decide to kill them all. They're glitched or something and don't put their pikes down or try to attack at all. Sad.

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/5848/perg1173.jpg

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/4859/perg1174.jpg

    Look at those archers go ...

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/8804/perg1175.jpg

    You can build pyramids for Pergamum now. Or, er, temples to Zeus? Or just whatever I want. That works.

    http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/3271/perg1176.jpg

    Captured a wonder! It's not too bad, I guess. The ones at Rhodes/Corinth are made of awesome though.

    http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/3329/perg1177.jpg

    http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/5647/perg1178.jpg

    Pirates are blocking my fleet, so I add one Trieme. Maybe I'll need two.

    http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/9016/perg1179.jpg

    http://img269.imageshack.us/img269/1050/perg1180.jpg

    Xantus, to the east, also has just its starting garrison. Spies couldn't get me in, so I'll make some rams.

    http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/4221/perg1181.jpg

    Myra, further down the coast. Great!

    http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/9717/perg1182.jpg

    Laodicea. Selucid. Also looks ripe, but I'll chew on the Egyptian holdings first. They're along the coast, after all.

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/1438/perg1183.jpg

    Macedon holds this city. Oh, and the pirates are gone. Perhaps I should get along to war with Macedon.

    http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/2919/perg1184.jpg

    The new governor remembers to grab those Cretans before someone else gives them an offer.

    http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/5066/perg1185.jpg

    My capital is large enough thanks to slaves, but I don't have the cash on hand.

    http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/5721/perg1186.jpg

    http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/5518/perg1187.jpg

    I queue up the core building for Mytilene though, just because I can.

    End turn again.

    http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/8570/perg1189.jpg

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/9795/perg1190.jpg

    http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/919/perg1191.jpg

    Some rebels are threatening that fort. The governor goes out with cash and gets some barbarian archers and finds some volunteers to take up hoplite positions.

    http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/8359/perg1193.jpg

    http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/8194/perg1194.jpg

    Greeks got there first. Looking tough with those Cretan hoplites.

    http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/6809/perg1195.jpg

    Going for a Temple of Forge in my capital. For money and upgrades.

    http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/9928/perg1197.jpg

    Time to take this place!

    Spoiler for Battle for Xantus (Assault)

    http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/3549/perg1198.jpg

    These five units with rams will knock many holes in the wall, allowing archers to turn most of the front path into a killing zone.

    http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/4138/perg1201.jpg

    http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/4598/perg1202.jpg

    http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/1111/perg1203.jpg

    As such ...

    http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/6702/perg1204.jpg

    http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/6996/perg1205.jpg

    I send my generals' units in to kill the peltasts and get out. Hopefully they won't get a facefull of javelins and die.

    http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/8776/perg1206.jpg

    With everything clear, there isn't really a need to do this, but I enter the village from several entrances. It's a little more important when fighting the Romans, who are strong and less vulnerable to arrow fire.

    http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/6425/perg1210.jpg

    Then onto the town square. No surprises here.

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/4387/perg1211.jpg

    Don't worry about the idiots who get in front of the phalanx despite being told not to - it isn't moving forward, so they're mostly just constantly blocking or dodging the few spearpoints that can reach them.

    http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/6058/perg1214.jpg

    http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/1387/perg1216.jpg

    http://img269.imageshack.us/img269/1091/perg1220.jpg

    Another win. Poor pikemen.

    http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/8273/perg1221.jpg

    More slaves for everyone!

    http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/736/perg1222.jpg

    On the same turn, I march to Myra (leaving troops behind to help the new governor I just installed) and find that my spies have managed to set up a welcome for us. Yay!

    http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/2783/perg1223.jpg

    Spoiler for Battle for Myra (Assault)

    Same old, same old. Some highlights:

    http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/2605/perg1224.jpg

    Nice death animation they have there. I think they fall to their knees and then drop on their face. The pike disappears at some point there.

    http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/4038/perg1225.jpg

    http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/4632/perg1226.jpg

    http://img269.imageshack.us/img269/5093/perg1228.jpg

    Catching the general and those peltasts.

    http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/7962/perg1232.jpg

    http://img269.imageshack.us/img269/9113/perg1233.jpg

    No problem, square cleared. Some militia try to steal the pretty hoplites' job.

    http://img269.imageshack.us/img269/7374/perg1234.jpg

    http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/2305/perg1235.jpg

    More losses this time. Probably due to those peltasts and their throwing sticks.

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/6523/perg1236.jpg

    Slaves! Slaves! Luckily slaves will trade and pay taxes - like all the other citizens.

    http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/6849/perg1237.jpg

    Right now Pergamum is at 9% squalor. Squalor maxes out at 100% Public Order penalty. Also, there's 20% worth of garrison effect.

    With another 10%+20%+20% = 50% ofpublic order (Law/Happiness) I could have VH taxes and 60K+ population.

    Getting grain imports is +20% PO from health, and there's about 30% PO more from health in the next 3 bath/plumbing line. And 20% more on top of that for the wonder at Corinth. Also 15% PO from the monument building - these last 35% can allow me to have a governor with no Influence.

    I'm intending to get Pergamum to the maximum possible population at some point.

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/91/perg1238.jpg

    After resting a turn, the army sets out again, and the spies open up the doors of Side. Good for them, the trio are well woth their total 300/turn.

    http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/3310/perg1243.jpg

    Yeah, slaves. More slaves.

    http://img269.imageshack.us/img269/2500/perg1244.jpg

    Look at Egypt, and then the Selucids as I take towns. Note that they're still larger than me (Wow, Selucids are huge).

    http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/6986/perg1245.jpg

    Now to turn back inland and fill up that area between my coastal holdings.

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/9199/perg1246.jpg

    Wow, this town doesn't even have a trader. Yeah, there's some building up to be done.

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/3959/perg1247.jpg

    The Greeks finally took that town. Looks like they've a goodly force there. I can take them on once I get a stack together.

    http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/5904/perg1248.jpg

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/1096/perg1249.jpg

    More to hand, I walked over and the spies got Laodicea's gates. You three rock, and they're only going to get better with experience.

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/9062/perg1260.jpg

    Yeah, get to work, guys.

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/7412/perg1261.jpg

    Meet the family, Argeos. Family, meet Argeos. I think he'll be going off to fight the Greeks and/or Macedon.

    http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/8079/perg1262.jpg

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/1259/perg1263.jpg

    Onto Apanea. Spies are just on a roll right now.

    http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/5572/perg1273.jpg

    Sorry, you guys are slaves too. Hop to it!

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/1151/perg1274.jpg

    Now for some fun! Here's an army of pikemen out in the open. Let's shoot them down!

    Spoiler for Like Shooting Pikemen in a Barrel (Field Battle)

    http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/6127/perg1276.jpg

    The generals run in and kill the peltasts just beyond the reach of the pikemen. Check one unit.

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/8582/perg1277.jpg

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/357/perg1278.jpg

    http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/1959/perg1279.jpg

    It burns, it burns! Opps, I meant you burn. Haha, burn brightly in the night air, pikemen!

    http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/8976/perg1280.jpg

    http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/1748/perg1281.jpg

    Two losses to friendly fire. Wow.

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/8895/perg1282.jpg

    Yep, you're definitely leading that new stack. I'd say you're a natural for the position.

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/7573/perg1283.jpg

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/2073/perg1284.jpg

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/7352/perg1285.jpg

    Onto Sardis. gates open again.

    Spoiler for Battle for Sardis (Assault)

    http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/7518/perg1286.jpg

    This is the largest army of pikes we've assaulted before. Unfortunately for them, if they have more pikes, I have more archers (7 units!)

    http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/3583/perg1288.jpg

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/5766/perg1289.jpg

    http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/9891/perg1291.jpg

    http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/5266/perg1292.jpg

    Never stood a chance. If it was an open battle, they'd probably have died even faster.

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/4388/perg1293.jpg

    http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/7439/perg1294.jpg

    http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/4379/perg1295.jpg

    My general pushed ahead of the milita column, and ended up running into the enemy general's light cavalry group.

    http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/6217/perg1296.jpg

    Since there's a large square here, I bring the archers inside to make easier work of the phalanx.

    http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/9972/perg1297.jpg

    Bait it so that they walk away from the archers ...

    http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/4095/perg1298.jpg

    It looks like it would be painful to bend like that to shoot. And then some of them are aiming 90 degrees off, so I don't get how they fire at those angles.

    http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/5361/perg1299.jpg

    http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/9625/perg1300.jpg

    http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/7678/perg1301.jpg

    http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/8189/perg1302.jpg

    Couldn't dodge arrows forever.

    http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/9972/perg1303.jpg

    http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/7444/perg1304.jpg

    Very light kills. The ranged cavalry died fast, and no need to grind the phalanx in the town square. Great!

    http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/2927/perg1305.jpg

    http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/1902/perg1306.jpg

    This'll be a little harder to crack. Only a little, though.

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/2043/perg1307.jpg

    Keeping Pergamum growing is getting harder as the squalor grows. I drop tax drops to Normal and axe some of the garrison. When I can build baths etc, taxes can go up and still have the city growing nicely. And there's the growth incentives line.

    http://img200.imageshack.us/img200/2585/perg1308.jpg

    Sardis can build mines. Great!

    http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/7568/perg1309.jpg

    http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/8387/perg1310.jpg

    Let's roll and take another settlement for the growing Empire of Pergamum.

    Spoiler for Battle for Ispus (Assault)

    http://img200.imageshack.us/img200/7740/perg1311.jpg

    http://img200.imageshack.us/img200/7400/perg1312.jpg

    http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/9035/perg1314.jpg

    Archers do what they can, now its time for everyone else to pull their weight.

    http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/2209/perg1316.jpg

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/2643/perg1318.jpg

    The generals manage to catch the peltasts and destroy them.

    http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/8922/perg1320.jpg

    http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/3218/perg1321.jpg

    A few stubborn holdouts in the street are put to the spear.

    http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/4143/perg1322.jpg

    This unit of hoplites couldn't do anything about that phalanx barreling down on them, so they run back for the gates.

    http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/5775/perg1323.jpg

    http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/2177/perg1324.jpg

    http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/7488/perg1325.jpg

    They enemies get a light showering of arrows and then they're caught in the junction near the gate and destroyed.

    http://img200.imageshack.us/img200/4365/perg1327.jpg

    http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/7623/perg1328.jpg

    http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/1231/perg1329.jpg

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/4604/perg1330.jpg

    As I direct the men to their places around the square, that general rushed forward. All of the hoplites just ran into one another like come multi-car pileup on a congested highway.

    http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/8238/perg1333.jpg

    http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/470/perg1334.jpg

    Bye bye phalanx. We'll take good care of the settlement for you!

    [/size]And now, for something completely different!

    http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/955/perg1335.jpg

    http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/1267/perg1336.jpg

    The general got caught on some bug and though he was still fighting those dead peltasts. Funny stuff. The hoplites didn't do anything the whole battle, just stood where they had been auto-placed in deployment and stood there in the phalanx as though someone might actually attack them.

    http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/8761/perg1337.jpg

    http://img200.imageshack.us/img200/3261/perg1338.jpg

    http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/7859/perg1339.jpg

    No surprises for anyone, by now.

    http://img200.imageshack.us/img200/2061/perg1340.jpg

    The Selucids are now less than three times my size! However, most of their settlements are quite far away.

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/332/perg1341.jpg

    You. You're going to be a glorified heavy cavalry unit unless you come to your senses.

    http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/2821/perg1342.jpg

    The starting of a new stack. Time to get army #2 out there and conquering. It's the natural thing to do when you have money starting to build up.

    http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/17/perg1343.jpg

    http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/390/perg1344.jpg

    Marching through the Free People's land, I find another Selucid town, with some people standing outside. Good, I can deal with them more easily.

    http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/9016/perg1345.jpg

    http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/1046/perg1346.jpg

    http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/7256/perg1347.jpg

    No way. You guys really hate yourself, don't you.

    Spoiler for Battle for Tarsus (Assault)

    http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/9971/perg1b021.jpg

    http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/4821/perg1b020.jpg

    Nothing new here. The archers walk up, fire arrows to their heart's content then go back to get paid and wait for the next battle.

    http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/7674/perg1b019.jpg

    http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/3248/perg1b018.jpg

    The assault runs into the enemy's two generals, 88 horsemen in total. That's a lot of mounted warriors!

    http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/5707/perg1b017.jpg

    http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/6659/perg1b016.jpg

    Look at those peltasts, oh dear. I don't think they can throw javelins without hitting theose horsemen, though.

    See how far back those hoplites of mine were driven back. Light units like that, even spearmen, won't hold off that many heavy horse. However, there were not that many casualties, though men were pushed back. Good work there.

    http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/7610/perg1b015.jpg

    http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/3337/perg1b014.jpg

    Like I thought, the narrow line of hoplites is too far back to get hit.

    http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/1336/perg1b013.jpg

    http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/7977/perg1b012.jpg

    Opps! Sorry guys! They took that volley dead on and lost a bunch of men. The generals quickly mop up before those peltasts can do any more harm.

    http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/4128/perg1b011.jpg http://img190.imageshack.us/img190/2729/perg1b010.jpg

    http://img269.imageshack.us/img269/95/perg1b005.jpg

    http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/5170/perg1b003.jpg

    I forgot to take the battle statistics, but its easy enough to see all the losses were on the militia hoplites.

    http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/8725/perg1b004.jpg

    Another town taken.

    http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/2014/perg1b002.jpg

    http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/4595/perg1b001.jpg

    Wow, these silver shields are probably more well defended against arrows than the Roman Principe (because shields are more effective in phalanx formation). That' just annoying.

    However, if they're taken on in an open field, archers will probably do them in from the sides or rear.

    Default Re: Pergamum: Council is IN Session

    Spoiler for Council Session 1 Info is in Here!!
    First Session of the Pargamum Council

    The first order of business is to decide the direction of the main Pergamum army. As it stands the troops remain at high levels of morale and are motivated to continue expanding the lands under our direct control.

    These are possible areas of expansion:

    Continuing further east will allow access into the Selucid mainland. As has been evidenced by sightings of elite troops, resistance may or may not be stiff, depending on their resolve to protect the interior.

    South, along the coastline, will lead to continuing contact with the Egyptians.

    Territories north of our main holdings are currently in the hands of loosely aligned parties that serve no leader.

    To the north-east, we have made initial contact with the Armenians, though only via intelligence channels.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Second on the agenda is the target of the newly commissioned force. Again, there are numerous possibilities.
    To the north-west of our holdings (or north-east of Pergamum) are several cities that are unaligned.
    To the south-west of Pergamum, an island that can serve as a convenient launching pad into greece, as well as Athens, a vital city in the area.
    South and south-west lie Rhodes, with the wonderous Colossus, and the land of the Cretans.
    Even further to the west lie more greek lands, with a renowned statue of Zeus, as well as the famed city of Sparta.
    Far to the north-west lie the lands of Macedon, who are known for mass employment of the pike. This has certain - ramifications - on the tactical side.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/6086/pergc1002.jpg

    Our third item is regarding a petition to build temples dedicated to Ares.

    (Since this line of temples gives experience bonuses, it is important to build it in a city capable of training the hoplites we want to use).

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/237/pergc1001.jpg
    Fourth is the proposal to construct temples to Apollo in Halicarnassus.
    (The ancillaries from here give BattleSurgery, which heals troops "get better". The important thing is that they stack with doctors, etc, from Academies.)
    A) Yes, destroy the rebels
    B) Leave them - for now ...
    Which city hoplites do we want to use?
    A) Pergamum
    B) Rhodes
    D) Athens
    Syracuse is too far, and Spartans are too expensive, so those are not options.
    Sicilian and Tarentum hoplites, are also far, and do not have a command banner, so those will never be used.
    Ask for pictures of the different hoplites, if you want them. I can't get them in custom battles, though I think I just have to remove the no_custom to get them in for easy picture taking.
    Default Re: Pergamum Campaign: Council is OUT of Session
    Spoiler for Update 2 is Here!!
    The diplomats report:
    The Free People are a diplomatic power to be reckoned with, having allied themselves with the empires of Macedon, Carthage and even the Selucids!
    As enemies of theirs, we will soon be at war with the whole known world (and possibly even unknown).
    Keeping our eastward momentum, the Conqueror finds Antioch protected by sturdy stone walls, and sets his men to building ladders.
    Halicarnassus begins building the temple. Hopefully many trained healers will be ... trained.
    Closer to home, the newly raised Second Army finds a large group of enemy infantry and promptly attacks!
    Spoiler for Battle near Ephesus (Field)
    Initially, the hoplites form up into the standard "single line" formation that they would use to repel frontal assaults. However, as they close towards the enemy, which has many units of phalanx hoplites, they break into two lines so that less men will be in front of an enemy phalanx when the time comes.
    A unit of enemy hoplites rushes up towards the front line, slamming into a unit well prepared and in defensive stance. At the same time, units on either side rush forward to get around the pinned unit.
    It is quickly surrounded and taken care of before any help can arrive.
    Similarly with the first few phalanx units that foolishly allow themselves to be surrounded and cut up.
    For lack of much else to do, the archers begin shooting fire arrows into the mass of men slowly marching towards them. It might not do much damage, but even one kill will cause some morale loss.
    The enemy general quickly loses his life against the spearmen. Even heavy cavalry have issues when stopped and attacked by dense spear formations.
    Losses were rather high, but pretty much all militia hoplite units (some to friendly fire). Victory!
    Continuing off the momentum, the Second quickly lays siege to the rebels and begins work on several rams. Reinforcements should arrive before the assault will take place.
    **Next Turn**
    With the ladders ready, it's time to take another settlement for the growing Empire of Pergamum! Take up those ladders!
    Spoiler for Battle for Antioch (Assault)
    The ladder carriers quickly get up and over the wall. Despite being shot at by the enemy towers, said towers as well as gatehouses are quickly captured without issue.
    A unit of levy pikemen get the clever idea of blocking the gates. A unit of archers clims up onto the wall and removes the obstacle.
    Then it's onto the square. A unit of archers provides some fire support, though it's more to get them some experience rather than because it's actually needed.
    Victory! All of the losses you see are militia hoplites.
    Off go the Selucid civilians into slavery. On their backs, Halicarnassus is able to grow.
    Just a little south is another Selucid settlement. The spies get the gates open, and the assault begins before news of Antioch can reach the Selucids.
    Spoiler for Battle for Sidon (Assault)
    No prizes for guessing why those bodies are only levy pikemen and arranged in a neat square formation.
    The enemy general quickly sacrifices himself to take down a few militiamen.
    The Eastern Infantry decide that dodging arrows isn't in their job description. By attacking the hoplites waiting for them in a phalanx, they save themselves from the arrow fire.
    But not from the archers that ran around to shoot them in the back. Go Cretans!
    Rather high losses there, given that I didn't have to grind pikemen down. Possibly because of friendly fire - maybe those Cretans should've gotten closer. But that's a dangerous move. (Enemies can run at them and kill quite a lot, since you're standing on their town square).
    I think the Selucids should know the gig by now. Off to work!
    Oh, silver shields. Those guys have these small shields that are as effective at stopping arrows as a much larger Roman scutum, did you know?
    Victory is declared, bringing the war with Egypt to an abrupt and unilateral end. As part of the victory proceedings, Egypt is allowed to keep all of its few remaining settlements and can continue to maintain its armed forces.
    Yeah, sure ...
    The Selucid army that failed to stop us from taking Antioch appears determined to take it back. Let us see how militia will fare against those cataphract cavalry.
    That was fairly pointless...
    Time to take Ephesus, and a second Wonder.
    Spoiler for Battle for Ephesus (Assault)
    The enemy has many phalanx hoplite units, so it is imperative that the rams knock many holes in the walls so I can rush in many units of hoplites, allowing two units to gang up on each phalanx.
    The archers get to shooting, but they won't do much against those shields, unless the enemy turns their back or side to us.
    I start the attack by moving in two units, who immediately enage those horsemen. I hope that the enemy hoplites would move down, this exposing their weapon side to my archers.
    They don't budge.
    5 more units flood in through the unguarded gaps. There are 3 enemy phalanxes, but those two units that entered earlier will even the score nicely.
    Some heavy cavalry are intercepted in a side alley and killed.
    These poor guys got caught in between two phalanxes and a wall. The phalanxes were destroyed, but not in time to save them.
    Victory was not in real doubt, but losses were high. Oh well.
    The slaves get one last took at the Temple of Artemis (hey, one of my settlements has a Great Temple of Artemis!) and off they go.
    And old age finally gets him.
    Chalcis, on a small island north of Athens, will provide a valuable foothold in the greek region, and will also eventually grow to be a good trade partner.
    Marching eastward, the First runs into and attacks Damascus.
    Spoiler for Battle for Damascus (Assault)
    Those archers can't actually kill the silver shields easily, but if you get one kill, they tend to move about, and this lets you shoot them in the back or sides, which can bring down quite a few.
    I trap the silver shields between two units of militia, but the enemy general interferes, so the Pergamian Hoplites have to save the day. It's a pity they have to get their gleaming cuirasses dirty.
    Those silver shields fought down to 1 man before finally routing.
    Pull a unit of levies out of the square with arrows, shower them with a few more arrows then crush with spears. Easy.
    Camels are pretty tall, huh.
    Victory at the head of an arrow.
    After sending off yet more slaves, our esteemed Conqueror goes out to find some more.
    I hate you both so much. Why do you do this to me?
    The massive tax bonus that Pergamum gets means I make money with using a large garrison to keep taxes high.
    Some free people are here, so I'll have to wipe them out at some point - better do it soon. But next turn, once everything is ready.
    And they go and siege the town that I JUST TOOK from them. However, I shall not take the bait - onward!
    Just in case anyone was wondering how I seem to always get into the town via spies - there you have it. I get in about 101% of the time ^__^
    Quick glance at Athens. I see 15000 potential slaves. Heh.
    As expected, I succeed in my 101% chance of success. Lets grab more towns and leave the Selucids deep behind enemy (our) lines.
    Spoiler for Battle for Palmyra (Assault)
    That's another settlement.
    The Free People are definitely the big thing nowadays. On another note, see how the drop in Selucid territory corresponds to an increase in Pergamum's territory? Cool, isn't it?
    Another battle. Nothing big at all.
    Spoiler for Battle for Chalcis (Assault)
    I don't think they're encouraged by MY general. Oh look, their hoplite friends are a little too far behind.
    Om nom nom on the peltasts.
    That unit of militia there turned the corner and attacked the side of the hoplites that were chasing my general.
    However, those hoplites were too strong and pushed them all the way against that low wall and nigh obliterated the unit. Ouch!
    Finishing off our meals - er I mean enemies.
    More slaves, more!! Pergamum's empire can't be built in a day, you know!
    "An end to the fighting? Surely you jest! Some of you yet live!"
    Mr Barbarian diplomat knows the perfect thing to say.
    I'm coming Athens. Just wait and I'll be there to enslave you all, haha!
    Actually, only 50% of you all, but that's good enough for me. Also, a merchant's quarter, awesome.
    Default Re: Pergamum: Council is OUT of Session,Voting Coming
    Spoiler for Council Session 2 Info Here!!
    From the previous Council Session:
    Motion 1 concluded with unanimity for the continuing persecution of hostilities with the Selucid Empire.
    Additionally, an active attempt will be made in the future to "fold in" terriroties of Armenia that may otherwise fall under Selucid influence.
    Victory is declared against Egypt, and all hostilities are suspended until further notice.
    Motion 2 was inconclusive, though it narrowed the options enough to allow for significant future planning. Currently the city of Athens is under siege, and an off-coastal island has been taken.
    Following the submission of Athens to the Empire of Pergamum, motions will be made towards the island of Crete, which has two important settlements, and that of Rhodes. After that, a new direction will be needed for the Second Army.
    Motion 2 Part 2 passed unanimously. The rebels were wiped out, with acceptable losses.
    Motion 3 ended with a hung council. Because Athens has the famous Pantheon of Zeus, more Pergamum hoplites will
    be encouraged to enlist as professional troops in all future military operations.
    Motion 4 passed unanimously. Halicarnassus is in the process of building up a temple for Apollo, that we are informed will match the Wonder that was already present when the area came under out control.
    Projections for the empire: Exponential Growth in all areas (territory, armed forces, income and construction).
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`

    Now, onto the current day's business. There's something a lot more important to consider than existed a few years ago.

    Rome and Macedon have allied together. While Rome is far from us, Macedon has interests very close to our current holdings (Corinth, specifically).

    Corinth is particularly important because it has iron. As a result, building a foundry and temple to the wonderful god of craftsmen will have two effects:
    • It will complete the required set of upgrades for archers
    • It will allow a large number of well-equipped troops (read: Pergamum Hoplites, Archers, and many, many Militia Hoplites) to be created

    The army has already been dispatched with its orders. However its direction after Rhodes is unknown (and a little ways off).

    Motion 1: Second Army. Grand Strategy
    After Athens, Crete and Rhodes, shall it:
    1) Perform an amphibious assault upon what is left of Egypt (travel south from Crete, land on the west part of Egyptian holdings and work eastwards)
    2) Commence offensive actions against the Empire of Macedon
    3) Take control of the southern half of Greece (Argos, Sparta and Messene - the last has the status of Zeus wonder, and Zeus is important to Pergamum).
    4) Attempt to move into Sicilian land and establish a foothold there
    5) Attempt to move into Italian land and establish a foothold there

    Motion 2:
    The state's income is high enough that building projects are being planned well into the future. It may be time to consider a new force.
    Should it be tasked to:
    1) Assault the areas of Byzantum, just north and across from our city
    2) Prosecute a war against Egypt (either by landing on the west portion, or overland/sea to the northwen portion where the First Army turned into the Selucid lands)
    3) Something else? Put it forward.

    Motion 3:
    On the subject of city development, different governors have their own individual approach. Should they be tasked to maintain a consistant growth plan across the empire?
    1) No, let them do what they think is best.
    2) Strive to grow the city as fast as possible, while keeping it under control.
    3) Strive to ensure the city has all the important amenities and facilities (baths/market/road) before chasing growth (in this case, pop groth incentives/farm)
    4) Prepare infrastructure for the rest of the empire - ports+roads
    5) Maximise the public order of the city, no matter how high it is, before doin anything else.

    A bit off-topic here, but you would seem a great person to write a strategy guide, or an AAR.

    Default Re: Pergamum: Council is IN Session,Voting on Grand Strategy

    Well, it's more of an interactive AAR, isn't it? If I just did a straight AAR, it would be less interesting, I guess.

    Like my Syracuse campaign, I think it's almost literally true that the only units that I ever take losses on are the Militia Hoplites (and General's bodyguard), since I'm so careful with my archers and city hoplites.

    Also, it's not really funny since I tend to push on every front at once, since all you need is a city with a foundry+forge temple to make excellent troops, and any single town with, oh, 6000 population, can pretty much supply your invasion needs (upgraded militia aren't really much better at all)

    Now that's an interesting thought. Maybe there'll be options to vote for "seed forces" that will do just that - sail around, land in the middle of some empire and start killing everyone in sight.

    Motion 1:
    New proposal: assault Byzantium and work down through Macedon.
    Reason: difficult battles are ahead and you need an experienced army.

    Motion 2:
    New proposal: Create a new army and assault Greece from the south, taking the southern peninsula and holding up in Delphi.
    Reason: the battles will be less difficult, so you have the less experienced troops; the pincer move devastates the enemy.

    Motion 3:
    New proposal: Create a designated city for military in each campaign area, supplying you with fresh troops and upgrades in close proximity to the army. All other cities focus on infrastructure, unless there is a lower tier building that is beneficial.
    Reason: every city should not be doing the same thing. Unanimity is not always desirable.

    Default Re: Pergamum: Council is IN Session,Voting on Grand Strategy

    One thing I should note is that experience isn't really important to think about at all when making your decision.

    • For the militia hoplite units, some of them can reach 1 exp, but they rarely, rarely ever get to 2, since such units tend to constantly take large losses.
    • For Pergamian hoplite units, they hardly ever gain exp, no matter how many fights they're in because most of the time they literally stand in place and look pretty.
    • For archers, yeah - but they tend to not go above 5 experience (greek archers, anyway).

    At some point, we'll get to the age of spamming 5 experience greek archers, having 6 in a unit and another 6 in a backup stack (for use in sieges, heh heh). Archers are actually generally effective against units with bad armor/shield ratings, or anyone from the back. More experience tends to not change much. In some cases, it's the difference between needing 3 volleys to rout a unit (shooting from the back) instead of 2. It is unlikely that a unit gains very much from experience, especially since in a "real" battle, they do very little at all, because otherwise they would hit the hoplites.

    I wouldn't worry about getting more "experienced" troops. It makes the archers a little better, but the wonders of Hannibal's veteran troops isn't likely to occur here. Anyone who actually fights in a melee will generally take rather large losses (partially because of battle difficulty). ESPECIALLY with enemy archers, etc.

    Yes, but an experienced general can help turn the tide in a close battle. I find that new generals and those with low command ratings take less of a morale hit on your army when killed, and generals that stay with armies and have a high command rating take a greater hit on morale when dead.

    Spoiler for Update 3 is Here!!

    Another turn, another settlement. Just a small force *yawn*

    More slaves. Yay.

    Here's a stack with pikemen, some peltasts, more pikemen, a unit of sword hoplites, and even more pikemen, just south of Edessa.

    I can't reach another settlement this turn anyway. Let's go.

    Spoiler for Shooting Pikemen for Experience and Profit (Field)

    It's a night battle.

    I immediately zero in on those sword hoplites. My general catches them in a charge, then pulls back. As the chase, the enemy gets a good dose of pointy FLAMING goodness, and then gets charged again. The unit is destroyed.

    Everyone starts eating up the pikes.

    Some peltasts try to approach the hoplite line, and they're shot a bit and eaten by the generals. Lots of experience here.

    At the end of an arrow. Yeah, a few managed to walk away.

    Assandros here is threatening Antioch. However, since he hasn't laid siege, I can probably grab another settlement. It might also draw him towards my main stack (to defend said settlement) making life easier.

    Less walking, you know.

    Next turn, and here's the town. Not much, some javelin cavalry, peltasts. One unit of phalanx pikemen, that won't do very much at all.

    Spoiler for Battle for Dumaetha (Assault)

    With only 4 units of archers, we'll have to conserve arrows, otherwise getting a unit through the gates will be impossible.

    The archers deliver. Not a bad start, but the enemy just hides there out of range. My general will lure them out by doing this ...

    And they fall for it. How charming.

    The horsemen keep on moving further into the settlement though, catching and attacking some light horsemen.

    They try to get out, and even kill a small unit of surviving pikemen, but to no avail.

    The archers try to clear a way, but ...

    No, stop running around and killing people! It's dangerous to be inside a settlement full of angry pikemen!!

    Another way out. See the poor guy who got a javelin the face. Sad, isn't it?

    Hoplites take to the street and make towards to square.

    The crazy general (he actually hides in a giant pot, as seen in the last update) goes off and kills more peltasts. Saves the hoplites from the javelinning, I suppose.

    Lure pikemen by shooting pikemen. Shoot pikemen. Catch pikemen with hoplites upclose and kill. ^__^

    Here a unit of phalanx pikemen come out, followed by some levy ones. The levies COULD have killed those militia in front of them, but instead ...

    They turn and abandon their (more professional) comrades to their stabby fate.

    They're punished for this, of course. By being stabbed repeatedly.

    Very few losses. The archers did well, again.

    Slaves.

    And that's his army. Sad, isn't it? Mostly pikes, again. Only seven, SEVEN of those cataphracts. Not going to do much with those.

    Pergamum starts on Ares. Then it'll be onto the Ludus magna to max out the experience new units get. Ignore the baths/academy, they're to catch "overflow" in case I forget or something.

    The wall is a little "corruption free" treasury.

    Now to take Athens, and reap those 15000 slaves! It'll be a hard fight, what with a unit of armored hoplites as well as 3 each athenian and sword hoplites.

    Spoiler for Brave Battle in Athens (Assault)

    "How many of us who see the dawn will live to see the night? I tell you, the sons of Greece will see the dusk, and will be triumphant!"

    Yeah, but which ones of them, wiseguy.

    I have six units with ladders, and place them about the walls.

    Up ladders!!

    Not amusing that the towers can do this. Oh well.

    Athens starts off with a Pantheon of Zeus, but isn't top tier.

    These archers probably killed enough men to make up TWO units. Sheesh.

    Small race for the tower. I win. There isn't anyone below for it to shoot, though.

    We fight as the archers prepare to slaughter poor militia. From the unshielded side, too. Ouch.

    Compare the piles of bodies. Those archers ...

    Eventually, though, the survivors get their revenge, for what its worth.

    Meanwhile, just in the gate, the armored hoplites attack a phalanx of militia, who are determined to keep the gate clear.

    Some wall runners are going to take those enemies from the rear. But what's that in the distance?

    Athenian hoplites! All ... 61 ... of them? Must've been wandering around getting shot at by the towers. Still, the men on that side weren't ready, so it'll get messy.

    A second unit comes to help attack those hoplites from the side.

    Meanwhile, the unit that killed those archers goes on to fight some peltasts for a gateway I don't really need.

    And the armored hoplites, surrounded on both sides, take out their swords. Suddenly, their attack becomes worse and they start to go down after being throughly stabbed from all sides.

    Won the gatehouse, but there isn't anyone waiting to come in. How sad ..

    While marching towards the city square, the leading unit of militia hoplites is attacked by another group of athenian hoplites.

    I had intended to trap those in an alley and crush them from two sides, but apparently they decided to not wait for the other group to come up behind them *sigh*

    There isn't much I can do to help them. Once friendly fire isn't a problem (because there are no friendlies ) my men open fire.

    Units rush the enemy, but in Guard mode, to hold them in place, and then -

    A supporting unit coolly walks past and attacks from the side. Since the Athenians turn to face this new threat, there's no reason to keep the other group in Guard mode. It degenerates into a spearfight, and the Athenians resort to swords.

    And here come the other half for the failed "hoplite trap". With their help (two semi-depleted units) the enemy is destroyed.

    Marching up to the square. You know what's happening.

    Everyone forms up and archers lure the enemy in. See that first phalanx? It got pushed back all the way into the second one!

    By horsemen, none the less. Amazing.

    Die spartan.

    Look at how far back they got pushed. However, there weren't that many losses, considering they were fighting generals' bodyguards.

    Really, really far back.

    The swordmen fight, but their friends just sit and watch. What happened to the other two units of sword hoplites? I have no idea. I guess they actually ran around and got shot to death. Honestly, the AI ...

    We start fighting with the athenians, and look, they push the men off the square and nearly through the width of the road! Wow, that's some pushing power there.

    Demonstrating the "buddy" system. Stab an enemy on their left side or rear, and their defense stat can't help them - means they're much easier to kill!

    I kinda wanted to let those guys live (end battle) for their valor, but they DID leave their allies to die, so they die too.

    Look at all those kills. And losses, wow...

    Ergh, about 439 short of 15000 slaves. Oh well.

    My crazy general was building some tower for, uh, "keeping tabs on" Egypt.

    Not that we're afraid of them, oh no.

    AHA, and there's the third stack we want. How convenient, I didn't know I had the family members just lying around to put that together.

    Nicomedia is ready to take on those Free People.

    Spoiler for Battle Outside Nicomedia (Field)

    Single line formation. You can see the archers (only have two units) breaking off to either side. It's time to arrow and anvil them to death.

    Hey, those backs are pretty open from this angle. *thwip*

    Oh no, those thracians broke through the line and engaged my Pergamian hoplies (only 1 unit of them) before I could stop them. Help comes, but sheesh, it's gonna cost me.

    And then the enemy general arrives to help his men. Too late though, most of the thracians are already dead.

    He's sent off with an arrow in the back, just like so many of his men. HAH!!

    Seriously, how do you kill so many hoplites in such a short time?

    That isn't the army near Antioch, it had cataphracts, not elephants and ... FOUR family members. Wow.

    Preparations for the Third Army are under way.

    With that out of the way, let's clear these guys away. With such numbers, surely ...

    Spoiler for Push Them Back! (Sally from Dumaetha)

    First of all, everyone gets out their lighters and begins shooting fire at the elephants.

    By the way, those elephants all died on the Seleucids' own pikes. They also killed a bunch of pikemen for me, as well. Thanks!

    Shooting pikemen. Great fun. I see some of the archers didn't put away their lighters.

    I'm worried about those Syrian archers, with long range. Carefully moving some hoplites forward (under fire, even) I then run up the Greek archers and light them up!

    A general makes for the archers and is blocked by two units of militia who throw themselves in front of his horsemen.

    Brave militia, we (the archers) salute you.

    The others run straight into the front line and start making a mess of things.

    Owned. Owned. Owned. One got away, no biggie.

    Ah, poor hoplites.

    Reinforcements for when the First goes to relieve Antioch.

    Nice catch!

    Ok, these guys were siegeing my town. When I attacked them, they ran for the boats.

    No, this is where you die!! Blah blah blah spartans, etc etc

    Now we will document the field testing of an interesting engine of war that we came upon in Athens.

    The onager.

    Spoiler for Testing the Onager (Field)

    Protocol dictates that you should not stand too far in front of an operational onager. They're dangerous.

    The target will be this unit of enemy hoplites.

    Various impacts, done at full operational range of the engines. Tests were quite positive.

    This will be useful against phalanx hoplites and pike formations.

    After the tests, the engineers follow the drill and hide under the protection of heavily armored hoplites. This will keep them safe when not operating their machines.

    The test concludes with the cretans mopping up any survivors.

    Now to save Antioch.

    Spoiler for Battle for Antioch (Relieving Siege)

    The general catches the cataphracts and easily dispatches them.

    The archers have a field day shooting pikemen.

    Those two horsemen. TWO of them!! Instakilled 10, TEN archers! What the heck?!

    Archers all ran out of arrows, so the hoplites have to finish the job.

    Seleucid family member was caught and killed
    . And the archers "got better". Maybe they were just concussed?

    Yep, welcome aboard. Hey, with those three guys earlier (remember them?) we can make a Fourth stack!!

    Lets take Crete. It currently has a temple of Artemis (of course) but eventually it will have a foundry and forge temple. That, along with the other settlements, which (already) cover Ares and Artemis, will allow the awesome training of +5 exp /+7 attack archers. Can't wait ^__^

    But that's for next time.

    Also, post more, there's getting to be, I don't know, ~700+ pictures on this one page?

    If anyone has ideas for "seeding" with a Fourth stack (drop an army far far from where we are and have it carve out a mass of territory with minimal reinforcements, mostly units recruited on site) then go ahead!

    Council session 2 is still open as of this post's last edit.
