A piece in Metro Santa Cruz begins with this interesting quote:
“We are the modern equivalent of the ancient city-states of Athens and Sparta. California has the ideas of Athens and the power of Sparta.”
–Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger

Thebes applies too, since they have San Francisco.
Let him eat cake, I say. The fact that this -otherwise not idiot- man says anything that could impress (positively or not) just for the sake of it means we should not take him seriously.

No one is Athens and Sparta except Athens and Sparta.
Hellenic Air Force - Death, Destruction and Mayhem!
Heh that reminds me of those whacky quips from movies, like: "I made University in Paris, Idaho" and the likes.
"Romans not only easily conquered those who fought by cutting, but mocked them too. For the cut, even delivered with force, frequently does not kill, when the vital parts are protected by equipment and bone. On the contrary, a point brought to bear is fatal at two inches; for it is necessary that whatever vital parts it penetrates, it is immersed. Next, when a cut is delivered, the right arm and flank are exposed. However, the point is delivered with the cover of the body and wounds the enemy before he sees it."
- Flavius Vegetius Renatus (in Epitoma Rei Militari, ca. 390)
They might be Athens and Sparta, but New York is Rome.
I guess people in Florida don't really live like spartans. I mean, luxury, hot chicks, ocean.
If that's Sparta count me in![]()
Is Philadelphia Philadelphia??
Arnold is a moron.
Miss me yet?
And the mexican border is great wall of america![]()
Washington DC is Rome. The architecture of our government buildings is modeled after Roman architecture. New York is Roman Carthage.
“The nation that will insist upon drawing a broad line of demarcation between the fighting man and the thinking man is liable to find its fighting done by fools and its thinking by cowards.”
—Sir William Francis Butler
This reminds me of a pet peeve I have: naming sports teams "Spartans," "Trojans," or any other city-themed name. You are NOT a Spartan unless you are from Sparta.

An army of sheep led by a lion is better than an army of lions led by a sheep - Alexander the Great

Frederick II of Prussia: "All Religions are equal and good, if only the people that practice them are honest people; and if Turks and heathens came and wanted to live here in this country, we would build them mosques and churches."
Norge: "Give me a break. Nothing would make you happier than to see the eagle replaced with a crescent."
Ummon:"enforcing international law will require that the enforcers do not respect it"
Olmstead v USA:"Crime is contagious. If the government becomes a lawbreaker, it breeds contempt for law; it invites every man to become a law unto himself; it invites anarchy. To declare that in the administration of the criminal law the end justifies the means-to declare that the government may commit crimes in order to secure the conviction of a private criminal-would bring terrible retribution. Against that pernicious doctrine this court should resolutely set its face."
Holiness is in right action, and courage on behalf of those who can't defend themselfs.
When you stand before god you can not say "I was told by others to do this" or that virtue was not convenient at the time

"Therefore I am not in favour of raising any dogmatic banner. On the contrary, we must try to help the dogmatists to clarify their propositions for themselves. Thus, communism, in particular, is a dogmatic abstraction; in which connection, however, I am not thinking of some imaginary and possible communism, but actually existing communism as taught by Cabet, Dézamy, Weitling, etc. This communism is itself only a special expression of the humanistic principle, an expression which is still infected by its antithesis – the private system. Hence the abolition of private property and communism are by no means identical, and it is not accidental but inevitable that communism has seen other socialist doctrines – such as those of Fourier, Proudhon, etc. – arising to confront it because it is itself only a special, one-sided realisation of the socialist principle."
