I just installed my SS 6.1 and when I try to play, it just exits..? Any people with experience on this matter?

It seems that this is the most common mistake, for some reason. Maybe it's too difficult to click on 2 download links instead of 1

Sometimes I get a CTD if I look at too many factions before starting the game, but then again I only use SS 6.0.

My desktop says 6.0, the game loadscreen says 6.1,

That's the way it should be.
Edit: maybe you should try to reinstall SS as there may be some missing files (it's quire rare).

Just think what faction you want to pick before you go off to pick them.
I haven't had a CTD with SS6.1 since I installed it, aside for a random one because I was dumb enough to click through all the factions in the "Late Campaign".
