    Default Garrison make-up

My garrison structure typically depends on region. I like to garrison cities with units that are indigenous to the region its in (e.g., Greek hoplites in Greek cities, Italic Infantry/Spearmen in Roman cities, Scutarii in Iberian cities, etc.) and only use factional units if no suitable AoR unit type is available). It adds a certain amount of realism, as well as a bit of variety when time comes to sally forth or do a bit of rebel hunting.

How do you structure your garrisons?

I like to role play a little bit. I might choose not to build colonies in a region like Galatia or Illyria for example and garrison it only with AOR units treating it as a client kingdom. Sometimes I will not use any AORs or Mercs at all (unless it's an emergency) and convert everyone on the map to my Culture using only core faction units. Playing different ways keeps it fresh and interesting for me.

Well in places where there is really nothing to fear, just some weak cheap soldiers make up my entire garrison forces. It depends on the area. I just plans those things as economical as possible.

I usally leave one faction unit and put one or two AOR unit (makes me think the regular faction unit is keeping everything inline) wouldn't want all AOR units with no family member or true faction unit in a settlement now would you? that would be a good cause for a rebelion

Why would they rebel? My subjects love me, because they know that if they defy me, I'll put their men to the sword and sell their women and children into slavery.

i know its just a game...but if you wanted to be REALISTIC..lets say your the impertor of rome and you conquer a gaul settelment would you just leave it with all the surviving barbarians? and take your roman army whole army to the next settlement? and leave a merenary unit behind? would you feel safer with a true roman watching your settelment? or a paid run away? im sure you'd go with the true roman lol.. thats if you wanted to add realism to your game (to me)
everyone has there own way..and thats mine

I almost always just use high number low cost troops as garrison. Perhaps this gives a bit less authentic feel, but I consider myself to be an OCD dictator. I almost always put four units into a city too, once it has passed the initial few levels of growth that is. Why? I don't know, I just like to click on my happy little cities and see that they all look the same. Near borders I don't garrison my cities any differently, I am either on the offensive or I use a roaming army to hold a static territory line.

Same as you, I guess. I also like having my capital garrisoned by two or three elite, expensive units-- I know it's ridiculous to station agema hoplites in Bactra when my front line is near the Levant, but hey.

I always garrison my capital with elites regardless of where my front is, too. It just seems wrong to not have Spartans defending Sparta, Urban Cohorts and/or Praetorians defending Rome, Silver Shield Legionaries guarding Antioch, or Basilikon Guard defending Alexandria, etc..

I just take whatever is at hand. In my current Ptolemaic campaign I use eastern spearmen in Damascus, and doryphoroi in Sidon and Hierosolyma. Some towns in Egypt are guarded by Nubians, and some by Greek troops. I depends on what I'm able to train. Antioch is on my front and garrisoned by phalangites and Syrian archers. I like to use AOR units whenever I'm on the move (mostly retrainable mercs) to give some exra flavour to my armies. In Iran I'll use more Media cavalry and in Asia Minor I go for Greek auxiliaries.
