    Default Finnish over Polish

As Garbarsarder judiciously reminded me, today marks six months since I was banned from the mod forums for the HEGEMON Affair.

Six months, my god, that's 1/120th of a person's life! Almost 1% of a person's life! In that time what developments did I see occur in my most anticipated Classical-era TWC mods?

    • Roma Surrectum II: Not Released -> Not Released
    • Paeninsula Italica: Not Released -> Not Released
    • Europa Barbarorum II: Not Released -> Not Released
    • RTR: FOE: Not Released -> Not Released

Wow, so basically nothing changed. I am kicking myself. I didn't have to waste my time browsing these forums over the past six months. NOTHING HAPPENED (that would be of interest to me in terms of new Classical-era mods that I would want to play).

Why? Why haven't these mods been finished? Its because they're taking TOO DAMN LONG. And they are taking TOO DAMN LONG because they are spending too much time POLISHING (I will exclude Europa Barbarorum II from that charge ; they are doing sterling work).

Seriously there is no need for that level of polish. Roma Surrectum II, RTR: FOE, Paeninsula Italica could have been out ages ago. The units (the most visible sign of progress) had been finished ages ago and touch-ups could be dropped in as patches. Everything can be done by patches. There's no need to keep these mods cloistered away just because a teensy-weensy thing isn't right, or there's some feature we haven't finished yet (but can be patched in). What happened to the 80-20 rule guys? 80% of the work is done in 20% of the time. The extra 20% can be patched in! Put some pace into it! (Although judging by the Is RTW modding old? thread I guess you guys are all a bunch of ossified old beards).

Six months and these mods have not been released. 1% of a person's life. You guys have kept me waiting for 1% of my life. How much more do you want me to wait? Do you want to drag on production for 1 year, 2 years, 3 years? You want me to wait for 5% of my life? Do you think I will even be the same person 5% of my life later? Do you think I would even care about your mod after that sort of time? No, I will be playing Nvidia 3D games on Windows 7 and I won't care a toss about RTW or M2TW.

Stop polishing! Get those mods out! The patch is your friend.

Oh and I forgot to mention. Something did happen in those six months:

    • Empire Total War: Not Released -> Released

See that's how you make money, bang hot chicks and generally make a success of your life. Release things!

Well its a bit violent, but i guess your getting your point across, its a viable point, but then players complain about how bad the mod is. Now you may say stop polish, but it will be polished by patches, but if they have a unbalanced game and people say its bad , then patches come out people wont bother+ Many patches gets complicated and issues happen

Note 1 : 6 months = 1/120 of your life ? Boy , you live a short life ..If i'm not mistaken , that means you say people generally live till the age of 60 ?

Secondly : Not all mods are about polishing stuff up , but more balancing and coding

I wholeheartedly agree. And you know what else takes way too much time? Creating your own work for your mod. I mean, how lame is that?

I hereby demand that the aforementioned teams stop producing their own work and borrow it from someone else. Release now, worry about credits later.

On a serious note: What makes a mod good IS the polish. If you don't care about polish, balance, details, stability etc, go play ETW... Apart from that though, all modders/teams are free to decide what level of polish they want in their mod, so it's not as if someone has the right to dictate to them what to do with their own projects. People should either have the patience to wait for a mod or the skills to make one themselves, otherwise not much they can do.

You`re taking it the wrong way. Whenever I was impatient to see a mod being released sooner rather than later at the expense of polishing it was when I wasn`t actually interesting in playing the mod, but in using some of the already finished(and previewed) stuff. Like the units for example since they`ve already been mentioned. So, you see, there is a likely and generally valid explanation for not wanting to wait until the mod is truly finished and playable without the necessity of an immediate patch. And I`d say the mods mentioned above are among the juiciest in terms of graphics that one could squeeze out of them. If you only want what`s already there you`re good with a beta or alpha even. Let the people who actually want to play it come up with a patch later. I`d be surprised if this is actually about polish vs finish and not something more like polishing vs don`t make me wait so long for the codding I don`t need anyway.

Well you know what they say, senility leads to originality. But I guess when all you do is sit in your room at the retirement home you have lots of time for creating your own work.

Unless you are some Military Experiment (gone wrong?) who has to spend his time browsing TWC and looking at Classical mods, I don't see how they wasted your time when you can, you know, simply go somewhere else and forget about them? Outside maybe?

I prefer finnish over polish, because I'm from Finland.

On the other hand I like to have my games - whether they are mods or games sold at shops - polished. So it's 50-50 I think.
